Well, my vet here has been so far unsuccessful in
placing a really nice ten-year old miniature schnauzer,
as I posted here recently. Apparently, even the rescue
society is not interested in helping.

Where are you? A ten year old but otherwise healthy miniature
schnauzer shouldn't be something that a miniature schnauzer rescue
group would avoid.

It puzzles me too. I posted about this dog here. He's at
a vet in an affluent part of Houston, Texas. I'd adopt him
except he exceeds the absurd weight limit of the condo]
project where I live.

A ten-year old healthy miniature schnauzer can be
expected to live another five to seven years.

Uh, not likely. A seventeen year old miniature schnauzer is pretty
impressive. The average lifespan is around 14 or 15. That still
gives an adopter five years - probably four before the old age stuff
starts really weighing in.

I don't know. I've run across a lot of MSs who are
more than 15. And a friend had a standard poodle
who lived to 18! This little guy is in excellent shape.

From anywhere in the US, you can always try Michelle - the AMSC rescue
chairman - at

She can tell you about any active rescue groups in the area and
perhaps put you in touch with breeders who do rescue.

Thanks, I'll try it.

What the heck is the weight limit at the condo that a miniature
schnauzer can exceed it? Or perhaps I should ask - what the heck does
this healthy miniature schnauzer weigh?

He's about 22 pounds. I used to be on the condo board of
directors. I tried to tell the rest of the board that the rules
were absurd. This is a semi-suburban project that is likely
to be demolished, but the current board thinks that they are
slaves to the rules. They made a kid give up his dog because
the dog was a few pounds overweight. It's crazy. We had a
fabulous Great Dane here for years before the current regime
took over.

Poodles are longer lived than miniature schnauzers. 14 or 15 is about
average for a miniature schnauzer lifespan. But they may not show
their age until the final year or so. Anything over 15 is to
celebrated but is not the norm. That's still five good years on this
guy!

Right. And there are several breeds that have
life spans of only six to ten years. I'm
working on both my sister and my mom
(88 years old) to take this little guy in.
