My friend with the seizuring poodle was so thankful for your helpful
responses, she's asked me for your opinions on her other dogs health issue.

"Will you please e-mail your dog e-mail lists and ask if anyone has had
experience with FHO or THR in a GSD? I want to know about 1. the recovery
process, including post-op care and complications with each procedure, etc
and 2. how do they describe the final condition of their dog i.e. activity
level, pain level, etc. "

"Let them know that she is a 4-year old, 56 pounds, otherwise healthy GSD
with parents that are very committed to recovery. She has hip dysplasia and
arthritis in both hips."

Let me say that money is really no object in this case, she wants to do
whatever is best for the dog. Her vet has suggested that FHO is a better
option due to failure rate of THR but she is concerned about long term
issues with a dog with FHO in both hips.

All suggestions, information or personal experiences (good or bad) welcomed

Hi BethF!
I think you may have heard me write about Becky in the past.

Becky was a dog that I purchased, trained as a search dog, did her first
search, and the next morning, my son left the gate open, and her back end
got smashed by a car. I couldn't afford to save her, and a benevolent
benefactor said she would fund a THR. I said she would never be able to
work, what would I do with her then, and the Benefactor said with her
training she wanted her.
We took Becky to a specialist who said a FHO was the better option for a
dog of her size and weight. (apparently size and weight is a major
factor, so this may not apply)
Becky had the FHO in both hips at the same time (not something normally
done, but inevitable in this circumstance), Due to the massive bruising,
Plates holding her pelvis together, and other internal damage, Becky had
to be picked up and carried to urinate/eat/and everything. For three
months, she could not life her head off a pillow. This is a worst case
scenario.

Becky is now 14. All but one of her siblings are now gone. ALL of her
siblings were dysplastic. (She had 7 generations -complete- of OFA
passing parental history.. the entire litter ended up dysplastic)

Becky is the only one who had a serious accident. Becky is the only one
who had a FHO on both sides. I would have expected her to be crippled.
Becky is the only one of her siblings who reached 14 without being
crippled. Becky is still running around the Mountains in New Mexico like
a spry active little girl.

I saw the specialist who did the FHO last month and reported on how she
was today. He smiled.

Diddy, that made me smile too. Thank you so much!! Hugs to you!
