I got a new Lab/Mix puppy a few days ago. I am having great success with
getting her to do her business outside during the day. I'm home all day and night and can watch her constantly. What I do is every time she gets up, I follow and ask if she wants to go outside, then open the door and go outside with her. Then many times she will do her business outside. Then I praise and reward her. But at night she will do her business inside. I will take her outside after she gets up, and she will not do anything outside. But then comes back inside and does her business on the floor! It is very dark outside and she does not seem to see well in the dark. I'm thinking I need to install a light outside and that might help? Suggestions? |

I take a headlamp out with the puppy after dark. (A flashlight will also do.) I illuminate the stairs because he will not go down them when he can't see them, even though he will bound down them during the day. I also illuminate his path to the potty area, while he's peeing and on our walk back in. Or you could install a light. Once she is comfortable with her surroundings and the yard, you probably won't have to light up the way, but you should at least for now. -- Lynne |

I think you need to put her crate by your bed so you will wake when she stirs, so that you can take her out BEFORE she makes a mess. wake up every two hours and take her out to prevent any accidents. A flashlight will do. |

Update: I installed two wired flood lights in the back yard which lights up
the area near the back door and the area beyond that where puppy does her business. So there is continuous lighting from back door to the doggie bathroom area. It worked! Took her out last night, she immediately sniffed around and did her business. This was the first time she has done her business outside at night. So thank you everyone for the suggestions!
