Default water consumption

I'm curious if anyone tracks how much water their dog(s) drink, besides
"seems normal" or "seems low/high".

My pets all share the same water bowl. The cats have their own but
don't use it. The dogs also have an automatic water bowl outside, so
they have fresh water to drink (and not drink the pool water!).

I felt that I was filling the communal water bowl a LOT, so I finally
got a "Le Bistro" waterer. 5 gallons (this sucker is heavy!). I got it
Friday midday, and filled it sometime mid-afternoon. We had to fill it
again Monday before bed. I think it's about 1/2 full now, but we've
been indoors more due to the heat, where we had been outdoors almost all
day Sunday, and a good deal of the day on Saturday.

Does this seem like a lot? A little? Just right? Unless the dogs are
guzzling or not drinking at all, I don't worry about it, but curious if
anyone else knows how much water gets consumed by their dogs!

I have two elkhounds (you know their size/condition) and one 24 pound
beagle. They all three drink one quart of water per day, combined.

They get watered out after their morning run, by sharing a half of a
small cold watermelon. In pieces .. not chunks. I've been sharing
watermelons with them since it got hot, which would reduce some of their
water consumption significantly.

I figure they can't over tank on watermelon, and it's cold, refreshing,
and they assimulate the water more slowly as they are overheated after
their run. Since it's mostly water, it's not going to unbalance their
diet (I hope not anyway) plus adds fiber.

so I figure in half of a cold small watermelon (about 9" in diameter)
plus 1 quart of water a day is what the three combined are consuming.
Hope that helps.

Sounds pretty much normal to me, at least for
retriever-sized dogs in hot weather (about 1.5 quarts/day
would be normal-ish for a 60 lb dog, with lots of wiggle
room for individual variation). I haven't been tracking
exactly how much my guys drink (I've got seven dogs drinking
out of the same bowls) but back when Greta was having her
various problem, those problems included polydipsia and she
was drinking *5* liters/day (combined with weak sphincter,
that was not a good time). She was the only dog at the time
we started treatment so it was easy to track how much she
drank.

hi dogs do drink alot of water in the heat so i wouldnt be to worried
about it. I am studying vet nursing and dont take what i say as a
diagnosis, but dogs do drink alot of water if they are diabetic or if
they have a kidney problem. Maybe it would be an idea to get the dogs
checked up by a vet. cheers
