... I'd think so except that you live with a house full of TERRIER. Not all costs are cash costs. You know, after doing earthdog and spending time with large numbers of terriers doing terrier things, I am more convinced than ever that miniature schnauzers do not belong in the terrier group. (Just ask the Europeans.) There very well may be no actual terrier blood in the breed development. It can mostly be explained by standard schnauzer crossed with miniature poodle. Yes, schnauzers are reactive and have a high prey drive. The breed job was that of a terrier. The attitude is there. But they don't reach the blind-to-the-rest-of-the-world point that other terriers (i.e. Welsh) do - even when faced with a live rat. As a breed, schnauzers are independent thinkers and some (i.e. Spenser) can be extremely bull-headed but I saw whole different levels of tenacity in the Welsh. Schnauzers approach rat hunting differently than terriers do. Border Terriers have the reputation of being one of the "easier" terriers. I think miniature schnauzers are easier than borders. Now I will admit, if you put a chipmunk on the front porch, - as happened last night while DD was trying to talk on the phone - and the noise level goes 0-60 in a split second. But all was quiet again with a minute and the screens remained in place. AND I have no dog hair. I'd pay higher feed costs for that one! Judy |

I think I'm getting out of it cheap. I know I am. 10 pounds of food last my 2 dogs for 2 months. Maui (12 pounds) gets 2/3 cup and Cali (8 pounds) gets 1 cup a day or as much as she wants really. |

I think I'm getting out of it cheap. Having the mix that I have, it really hits me how much of a difference the size of the dogs make. It doesn't even seem like I'm spending any money on feeding the little dogs once I've filled bowls for the GSD's. Same thing with water, not when it comes to cost, but effort. Once you have filled the same bowl a billion times in five minutes (okay, so maybe it only feels like that many times) before the big dogs finish their first drink after running around outside, the lapping of the lap dogs is a joke. If we ever went down to little dogs only, I'd probably have rancid dog food on my hands. I'd buy a week's worth of food just to find it lasting a year. -- Paula "Anyway, other people are weird, but sometimes they have candy, so it's best to try to get along with them." Joe Bay |
