My neighbors left their dogs here while they are on vacation. Each dog takes
a different diet. So I have three bags of feed additionally to my own.
Something smells rancid. Even though they provided food, am I obligated to
feed it?

I wouldn't. I would probably go buy a new bag of the foods in question
and ask for reimbursement.

Thanks. If they didn't want it fed.. then it wasn't. If they do want to feed
it, Then they will have the leftovers saved for them. They will need to buy
dog food anyway, so it wouldn't be wasted.
I kept wandering around looking for something spoiled, before I discovered it
was the dog food.
I even cleaned out under my freezer, suspicioning a mouse had crawled under
there and died. The dog food is THAT rank.

ICK. What kind is it? Some of the "Natural" foods rely on coatings in
the bags to help preserve it, etc. Other foods may have various oils
that go rancid. People are cheap and buy in bulk more than the dogs can
eat before it goes bad. All 3 of my dogs are currently eating the same
food (and all do very well on it). Makes it much easier to go through a
bag in a reasonable amount of time.

The one that is rank is in a trashcan .. no bag. I don't know what it is,
but I can call them and ask. they left their cell phones.

the thing is, everytime they leave their dogs with me, I find something
unsuitable and replace something. It might be a collar. Last time, I couldn't
find where they left their medication for the dog with the anti-siezure
medications. So they got left with a emergency vet bill, because I asked them
to open up on Sunday, and give me enough medications to last the week until
they got home. i think the bill ended up costing $150 for the inconvenience
that they didn't have to spend. But i wasn't about to NOT give the dog her
medications either.

They never said anything about the vet bill, and I have their dogs now, so I
guess it's ok..

That could be the problem. There's a chance that the food
itself hasn't gone bad, just the residual oils which stick to
the trashcan's plastic (probably not food grade) after a few
uses.

Try putting the food into a different container and see if it
still stinks. Put the trashcan outside. You're probably out of
luck, though - if the residual oils are rancid, so probably is
the food.

Like Janet, all of my dogs eat the same, so a 33# bag goes
quickly. Make that *too* quickly.

That matches with Rocky's and Friday's 5 week or so consumption
