In the case of Muttley's weight, I will start by giving him about 1/2 to
3/4 cup of his usual chow, once in the morning, and once in the evening.
He
usually does not eat it right away, and I don't see any need to make him
eat it within a specific period of time, unless it attracts bugs. And I'll
look into "better" food, although I like to go with variety, and
occasional
addition of "real" food like steak, chicken, and maybe even cooked brown
rice. Maybe I'll try some pumpkin as well. I had forgotten that Diddy had
suggested that.

Don't bother with the "real" food. If you don't have a specific
purpose to adding to the food then don't do it. To make it taste
better or because it is Love do not count as specific purposes.
Pumpkin or Green beans have a specific purpose. Steak or chicken in
your case do not. That being said, you can always treat with those
things. But treats need to be limited. A small piece of steak or
chicken makes a good treat depending on the dog. And to put treats
into perspective, Yoda is roughly the same size as a healthy weight
Muttley(judging by pictures and weight). Yoda gets dog biscuits
labeled for small breeds and he gets maybe three a day max. I have
never, and probably never will buy a dog biscuit labeled for Large
dogs.

Since we are on the subject of snacks, my various packs have learned (from
each other) a great appreciation for carrots, lettuce, broccoli, asparagus,
brussel sprouts, strawberries, and apples. They also get to share a pasta
noodle when I fix such a dish.
But since I walk three miles a day, play lots of fetch, tug o' war, that
sort of thing, they are a fit crew.
Kind regards,
