A couple of years ago, my 7 year old standard poodle starting getting
dry flaking skin on his back, then hair loss. It has been getting progressively worse. His thick, beautiful coat is a thing of the past and he smells bad. The vet didn't diagnose it; I did, on Google. He has Sebaceous adenitis, which is apparently incurable. All I can do is wash him often with medicated shampoo. Anybody else had any experience with this? |

I think growing up we had a poodle that had this. We had to use some of the tar shampoos for relief. There are lots of knowledgeable people on the PSG group |

Are you also giving him essential fatty acids? http://www.upei.ca/cidd/Diseases/der...20adenitis.htm .........Have you tried this treatment? http://www.vipoodle.org/docs/hmrxsa.htm Read Spring 1999 newsletter (page 3) for comments by a vet on the oil soak described above: http://www.cerebussamoyeds.com/sebaceousadenitis3.htm An owner comes up with his own treatment using oils and herbs: http://www.akita-friends.com/special/satreat.htm And I would definitely contact the Genodermatosis Research Foundation for the very latest in treatment suggestions - address at end of page: http://www.natural-akita.com/JPTeez/html/sa.html Anybody else had any experience with this? ......Here's the results of a survey someone did - symptoms, misdiagnoses, treatment: http://www.lhasaapso.org/Health_Genetics/Sebaceous.htm And I'd get a firm diagnosis http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB...00/PR00094.htm *Biopsy of the skin is usually diagnostic.* A Yahoo group for SA is mentioned at the end of this page: http://www.samoyedhealthfoundation.o...itis-sa?showlo ng=1 I will note that sometimes SA is compounded by hypothyroidism or Addison's disease - both common in standard poodles, so perhaps some testing is in order also. .......so there's a lot more you can do than shampooing. And Googling sebaceous adenitis I get lots of hits from breed sites and lots of personal stories. I'd read until my eyeballs fell out. Get busy. buglady take out the dog before replying |
