Default german shepherd medical emergency

Hi
I have a 14-15 year old german shepherd. She has been very sick of
late. Her normal periods which last 3-4 weeks has extended a week and
she's been bleeding much more then normal. She also hasnt eaten
anything in 2 days. I took her to the vet yesterday. He's considered
the best vet here. (Please note I am posted to a third world country
because of my job.) He also charges insane prices but I am more then
happy to pay it knowing my dog will get better.
Her appetite and bleeding has really scared me. The vet said that
she has a Utiris problem that comes with age. He said that this a
common condition for dogs her age and she needs surgery to correct
this problem or she will die. Also there;s a 20% chance she will die
because of the anesthesia because of her age. She's always been very
healthy, her back and hind legs arent strong as they used to be and
she has had a chronic off/on again ear infection. But this is really
scarying me. This vet is considered the best here but has a reputation
for taking advantage of people and charging enormous expenses. I dont
care about the money I will gladly pay it I just want my dog to get
better. I was wondering if any other german shepherd owners have had
similar troubles with their older german sheparards. This condition
sounds more like a disease problem. I would appreciate any advice or
shared experiences. I have scheduled her operation with the same
doctor but am getting a second advice from another vet tomorrow.
Please pray for her. I love her very much and it will be really hard
without her.Thankyou

Is your Dr spayed? Older unfixed female dogs are very prone to problems like
what you are describing.

If she is unspayed, she'll need an immediate hysterectomy and this is
serious surgery for an older dog.

.........it's probably pyometra - an infection of the uterus. This is a
medical emergency and if you've any chance of saving your dog you'll have to
have the surgery. Can he do bloodwork at his facility? how long does it
take? Does he have to send it out? She really should have her liver and
kidney function checked before anesthetizing. Also WBC and RBC to see if
she's anemic or has a systemic infection. If these values are OK I wouldn't
be as worried about doing surgery. If it takes too long to get bloodwork
back (if he can't do it as his facility), you're going to have to chance it
and hope for the best.

Have him put in an IV and run some fluids in her during surgery. She'll
recover from the anesthesia faster - less taxing to the kidneys and liver
and if anything should happen during surgery , they won't have to waste time
getting her set up.

Best of luck to you and your pup.........please keep us posted

My first GSD was not spayed and needed emergency op at the age of eight.
I think if your dog is loosing blood at and not eating you haven't got a
choice but to let her have the op.
The dog will not get better without a Hysterectomy and she will be so well
after she has it.
I guess the odds are fairly good for your dog.
I would go for it the sooner the better I think.
Pat.
