Default moving to another family too much for my dog?

Hi, i got my dog about 3 years ago, his family moved away and left him with
us. i know this was a good move as we treat him better then they did.
Now, In about 4 months I myself will be moving to another province where it
would be very difficiult to take him with me and I am not even sure I can.
Would it be too much for him to be moved again? He knows the person I wnt to
leave him with, and he will treat him well.
I don't know if this would be the best thing to do. If he stays he can have
the freedom he enjoys now as dogs here can run free, but If I move him, he
would be in an apartment building all day while I work and would not get
half as much excercise and attention as he could get if I leave him here.
What would be best for him? I know for me it would be heartbreaking to leave
him, but I want to do what's best for him.
Suggestions? Please.

It might be ok to leave the dog with your friends. It will depend a good
deal on how you do it. One of our dogs is a second-hand rescue and he did
fine with the transfer. (we, too, were well known to the dog before hand.)
Since it sounds like you have some time until you leave, you should start
now taking the dog over for visits to his future new home. Let him get to
know the area and get comfortable with the people who will be taking him in.
Then start leaving him there for a few days at a time. Then move him over
permanently while you're still around and can visit him there for a while.
Help him feel secure in his new surroundings and he should be fine.

best of luck!

thanks Davina. That should be easy as i live in a small community and its
only a couple minuts walk and he already knows the person, having him stay
overnight is a great idea! thanks!

This is really a tough one. People always assume that dogs need to have
lots of space to run. While true for some dogs many of them would just
prefer to be with their owner. Moving to an apartment isn't a bad thing for
many dogs as long as they get to remain with their owner. Your dog knows
you, your expectations, your schedule. His "home" is wherever you are.
Since he's already been rehomed once I'd really hesitate to do so again.

If I were in this situation I'd take the dog with me, give it a month to see
how it works out and then decide whether or not the dog would be happier
elsewhere. He'll adapt regardless of what you do, dogs are really good at
that, but it doesn't mean he'll necessarily be happy about it or that he
deserves having to completely readjust his life & attachments again. If you
choose to rehome him before moving then I'd recommend having him stay over
at his soon-to-be new home here and there for a couple of days. Get him
used to being left there and having a chance to learn the routine there
before leaving him full-time.
