Default From a friend--Lab throwing up orange/red bile

From a friend who doesn't have Usenet access:

buddy is throwing up this nasty orange red bile.. in very large quantities..
could you check with the news group please..

I have never seen this and have no clue.. but i am concerned there are liver
issues.

I know the first response is "see a vet" and I am sure he will do that
first thing tomorrow, but finding a vet on Sunday where he lives is
difficult to impossible. Buddy is a black/chocolate Lab and AFAIK
hasn't had problems like this before.

Septic Bile Peritonitis?

If he hasn't sought a 24 hour emergency vet already, it might be too late.

Costly yes. an effort for him? Yes.

He may have to drive over a hundred miles or so for help. If it were my
dog, i would.

Diddy is right. I think it's absolutely emergency vet time.

It sounds something like what our murphy, lab mix, did when she was
diagnosed with pancreatitis. Our's happened on a sunday late
afternoon/evening. At first we thought it was simply a typical barf-up, but
by monday morning I realized it was more serious then that and we had her at
the vets when they opened at 8:00 a.m.

If at all possible, I'd advise your friend to get the dog to a vet, call in
as an emergency, or what ever it takes ASAP.

Thanks, diddy, elegy, and shelly. I have forwarded your responses to
him and they match my own. I'll post back whatever I find out.

Bright red spots in bile is no biggie - darker (not spotted) red
indicates digested blood and could be a real problem.

What could a bright red spot be that is not a biggie? They could be the
result of an upper gastrointestinal bleed caused by something like a
perforated ulcer or a friable esophageal polyp, both of which need
reasonably prompt medical attention.

I just saw how late I was on this. I hope everything worked
out.

Bloody spots in bile vomit often result simply from the physical
stress of vomiting. I should have written "is not *necessarily*
a biggie." My point was that what *was* described probably is a
biggie.

Let's focus on Kevin's friend's dog for now, though.

Agreed, but I work in the healthcare field and always collect as much
medical information as possible.
