Default 2 questions about ear mites.

Response from diddy none:

Before starting, your vet will give your dogs a heartworm test to
insure they are heartworm free.

OK. After talking with the animal hospital again, the puppies are in
line for Ivermectin and Revolution (not sure if they meant both at
once or one or the other).

After the initial heart check that is.

I do not like cats.. judge away.

Um, no. I do not judge. : ) I just wondered WHY they were killed.

I have a family member who does the same thing with strays of any
kind. Normally the dogs they fall in love with though and end up
keeping.

The cats get shot then drug into the woods for the coyotes.
Anyway...

And since proper care of a pet IS expensive, I have a question.
Why collect more animals than you can afford to take care of
properly? not judging.. just curious

I think I am a little lost, no pun intended. Where did I say I could
not properly take care of the animals I have?

The only thing I MIGHT have said is that money runs tight sometimes.
If I did say otherwise or made you believe differently, my bad.

And I really did not mean anything inquiring about the cats. I hope
that is not what spawned this. If so, my bad again!

I appreciate your help and advice.

So far we
have been using Hartz ear mite medicine for dogs.

.......This what you've been using? I notice they say it may need to be
repeated.

No I have not (tried Tresaderm), but I just read about it yesterday
in fact and thought about posting here about it. My question was
going to be is it OTC (over the counter) medication or prescribed?

..........it's prescribed. It also kills bacteria and fungi and has a bit
of steroid in it to help with itching. I'm not a big fan of one size fits
all medicine, but in this case it's not a bad idea. Best if the ear is
cleaned out first - with any treatment using topicals in the ear.

.......as far as worrying about your dog's immunity, I wouldn't, not at this
point. Right now it's something to note, depending on whether there are any
other physical symptoms that are troubling. You mentioned these dogs were
rescued and that they were young. Hold old are they? How long have you had
them? Were they just in a bad situation or really skinny with numerous
physical problems?

..........Both of these products are for heartworm, so they don't need both.
They may be thinking of using the Revolution for the ear mites. My current
vet does not recommend Revolution any more for heartworm, guess they've seen
too many failures. Personally I'd opt for Tresaderm and Heartgard. I'm
just not too sure a dog should get 2 heartworm meds at the same time.
You'll also notice that while supposedly for heartworms and fleas, the
marvistavet site says Revolution is mainly for fleas.

........Read hear about heartworms.

.........Learn to ask questions of the vet.

Weren't you the one a few months ago inquiring about home euthanasia
because you didn't want to pay for a vet? If not, my bad. And i apologise.

NO.

No need to apologize, my memory is screwed because of a disability,
so I make simple (memory) mistakes like this all the time.

Have a great day, diddy.

Thanks for the link!

You mentioned these dogs were rescued and that they were young.

Right now it's something to note, depending on whether there are
any other physical symptoms that are troubling.

Oh, OK. I kind of thought this at first, but not knowing
specifically made me want to ask anyway.

There are NO other physical symptoms. My puppies are in the
greatest shape ever, play constantly, run constantly, and their mood
is great. No excessive sleeping or moping and no unwarranted
aggression either.

Hold old are they?

They are almost 3 years of age.

How long have you had them?

Um, I would say 2 years and 10 months (assuming 3 years is perfectly
accurate, I am probably off by a month or so).

Were they just in a bad situation or really skinny with numerous
physical problems?

Actually, ALMOST the opposite. They were bloated with worms (the
kind dogs get) and other things we could not identify. The animal
hospital eventually told us that some of the other insect related
stuff was just that. They found what appeared to be worms (like
earthworms), grubs, crickets, plastic, wood, and a few other things.
I forgot the name of the test, but it was something about examining
their fecal matter.

Once we got their diet regulated and they had expelled most of the
toxins and debris, they decreased weight by about 4 pounds each.

The situation they were in was they had dug a small hole underneath a
tool shed (in the mud) and were hiding from the other dogs in the
field, which was mostly comprised of mud and rocks.

They have since grown into very healthy, very active, and loving
mutts.

Thanks again!
