I hope I'm in the right place. I could use some help.
I have a very small dog. She's much smaller than I'm accustomed to. She was not properly socialized, which we work on constantly. We've been to training classes, but she completely ignores when I call her, even in the house. I do not let her off of her leash outside, but it's been rather challenging to get her to respond to the come command. I'll take any pointers. Please. Thanks in advance |

How did they tell you to teach her to come in the training classes? I ask because, from a logical point, one of two things is going on. Either their method is a good one, and you're not following it properly or consistently, OR you need a different method for your dog. To give a sensible answer to your question, we need to know what you've been doing and what your dog does when you do it. Without knowing more, I can only guess that you've been making the common beginner mistake: On the instances when your dog does come when called, it isn't worth her while from her point of view. She doesn't get enough praise, enough reward, enough FUN! INTERESTING! stuff going on with you. She takes herself away from something she was enjoying, whether that was a nap, a daydream, a squirrel, a leaf, comes to you, and only gets a leash or a walk in another direction. Further, when she ignores you, nothing happens, no consequence, so she blows you off. That's only my current guess, not an acusation. Tell us more so we can help. I'm hardly the expert on this subject, but many people here are good at training recalls. --Lia |

Here's Penny's background. She came to us when she was 5 months old and she was clearly not socialized. So, I immediately enrolled her in classes, which helped ME as well. We have been using the clicker-method and she's been incredibly receptive. I managed to teach her a bevy of different tricks, including rollover. So, I know that she's trainable and she's also coming out of her skittish shell. With regards to her recall, or lack there of...I was told to keep her on a short lead to start. Lure her with her treats (which she loves), and try to get her to come. Naturally, I click-treat-praise for every little step she takes. I then try to use a longer leash, get no response. I'm also baffled that if she's in another room and we call her, using a very happy, excited tone, as if to play...I get NO response. In fact, she'll lift her head up, look and turn away, as if to suggest that we are complete idiots LOL. I have deduced that she's not afraid of us, because if I click the clicker, she comes running. If we work on new trick, she's eager to play and learn, it's just recall. Sorry for so much info, just want to give you all enough to work with. Thanks so much! Sonja |
