Stormi is a 6 yr. old, full breed black Labrador.
She lives in the foothill with lots of plants and insects. She eats a balanced diet and takes Ivenhart Plus once a month to prevent heartworm disease. She has had episodes approximately every 4-6 months (that we are aware of). She has been outside or is outside and resting or sleeping. She gets up slowly and seems to lose muscle ability in her legs and shakes terribly. It can last 5-10 minutes. She seems to know something is happening but she can't walk and when she tries just falls over. It is almost like being drunk. She does not want to drink or eat anything during the episode. She has a little bit of diarrhea after she comes out of it. Then she is back to her normal self, running and playing as usual and ready to eat and drink her water. Any advice or suggestions of what could be happening, and/or how we could prevent it from reoccurring, etc. Has anybody ever experienced this type of problem. She has a vet and he hasn't given me very much help. Basically, he said, she will have to have a blood test while she is having the episode to determine what is happening. It would be impossible for me to get her to the vets in 5-10 minutes. Please HELP!! |

It's going to be difficult to pin down if it only happens every few months. Have you considered consulting a different vet, maybe one who specializes in neurology or internal medicine? I'd also keep Addison's disease at the back of your mind. Sometimes routine blood tests will not show it, you need a special test. But I'd definitely get a good health checkup and full bloodwork with urinalysis. buglady take out the dog before replying |
