Default A New Freecycle Twist

Our local Freecycle group allows free pet ads (not all do). This
morning, there was an ad for a Chihuahua x Chinese Crested mix
puppy. From the breeder. Apparently the "adoptive" (I really hate
it when breeders use that term) home fell through, so she's
searching for a new home. The puppy is 3.5 weeks old. The
"adopter" is required to pay for all vet care between now and when
the pup is placed, including shots (breeder estimates shots will be
$79 at Banfield). Has anyone seen something like that before?

Oh, and the breeder wants the "adopter" to have no other pets,
because, and I quote, "pet care is not cheap and we want him to get
GOOD vet care." Duh. I mean, that *is* why she's requiring the new
owner to pay for care that *she* ought to be providing, right?

I'd complain to your Freecycle moderator.

I belong to 2 groups, one my "local" one is the next county over. The
next county one is ummm - a bit more rural and a lot more "interesting"
as a result. It has a lot of pet ads. My local one has very, very few,
and they play by the rules.

The moderator added a note at the bottom of the posting stating that
it was within guidelines.

Ours has a *lot* of pet ads. In the last 10 days there have been
fish (Mollies, must take 2-3!), a Pit Bull puppy "rescued" from the
street the day before (!), four kittens and two adult cats, a young
chicken (sex unknown), a 16mo male Golden Retriever, a kitten and
2yo cat, two cute cats, a pretty black cat, a 1-2yo red male
Pomeranian named Bubba ("rescued" from mill but not UTD or neutered
WTFBBQ!!!), and a 6mo male GSD mix.

One woman in particular is either running a shoestring rescue, or
she is a serial animal owner, because every time I turn around
there's an animal ad from her.

My favorites, though, are offers for pets that were received via
Freecycle in the first place. Aieee! I mean, I guess it's good
that these animals are getting rehomed and not dumped at the
shelter, but the constant bouncing around is sad. I'm also
depressed at how few of the animals end up being "taken." Of the
list above, the Mollies are then only ones I recall "taken" messages
for.

ACK! Our group has a special section on rehoming pets, asking that a
lot of care goes into choosing a new home, etc, etc. I think the
statement is one reason we don't have a lot of offers.

Y'all seem to be doing something right, for sure.

We also have a "free pets" section in the local classifieds, in
which there are regularly entire litters of puppies. Some purebred,
even. And then there are the inevitable adolescent dogs. I've been
keeping a half-hearted eye on it, in case there is a dog I just
cannot pass up. E.g. today there is an ad for a free Pit Bull x
Chow male. I am equal parts tempted and sickened.

There is also a 1.5 year old "show quality" Mal bitch. My favorite
though is the free pot bellied pig. She's 13 *weeks* old. The ad
says "landlord will not permit." Isn't that the sort of thing you
want to find out ahead of time? Also, why not just return her to
the breeder?

I'd love to have a free potbellied pig. I'm leaving in a few minutes. Too
bad..
There was a free 9 month old wheaten terrier, well mannered, neutered,
housebroken, accessories this morning. I got to say I was interested.
I wonder if he had some of the many genetic afflictions and was considered
a lost cause and a money pit. There are so many things that can happen to
good dogs.

The ultimate killing machine. Fluffy with a lock-jaw. Your innocent
neighbors will never see it coming. Don't forget to carry the key
somewhere easily accessible to others in case it turns on you. I find
either around the neck or on a bracelet like the existing medical
condition jewelry works great.

Maybe it's skewed because people generally contact me when they have dog
problems, but the SCWT I see are nasty, biting, or just plain old weird.
I'd love to meet a stable one once in awhile.

I doubt there's a huge demand for pet pigs in town, so he might
still be available when you return from Kentucky.

Too true, and you don't really need another money pit. You've
already had your fair share of those, I should think!
