Default Nearly cried yesterday

I saw a neighbor of ours outside yesterday afternoon with his new puppy. So
of course I had to go down the road to get a few puppy loves. I knew it was
a little pit bull pup, my daughter had told me about it. Well, when I got
up close to it, I saw it's poor little ears. All crusted and bloody. It is
a very cute little, eight week old pup, but those damn ears made me so very
upset. The pup was trying to jump all over me to get some love, and I
picked it up to snuggle it. In the process of the puppy's excitement, it
kept knocking or bumping it ears against my arms or body and each time it
would yelp or whimper. I truly was somewhere between livid and breaking
down in tears. I did ask the neighbor guy 'why he had it's ears cropped
like that?" His answer was strictly for appearance. I told him I didn't
like it, that I didn't like cropping of any kind. I didn't tell him in a
nasty way, just that I thought it wasn't *necessary* and I didn't like any
sorts of things done to dogs that weren't *necessary*. I also discovered in
the course of our conversation that the pup will be kept as an outside dog,
in an enclosure in their back yard. Their back yard, also an acre lot, is
already enclosed with a six foot privacy fence, but the poor pup is to be
closed off in a kennel inside that already fenced yard. I tell you guys, I
was very saddened by the whole experience. Poor little fella.

The ears must be infected; aren't they supposed to be wrapped?

I don't know anything about these sorts of things. It sounded to me like
*some guy* did the cropping. Neighbor guy didn't say 'the vet' or 'my vet',
he said 'the guy I got to do them this time' in reference to the cropped
ears. He said the puppy goes back in a couple days to get the stitches out
and 'maybe that's when *this guy* wraps their ears?'

Let me say I am not prejudiced, I'm really not. We've had friends of all
races and backgrounds our whole lives. And before this guy got the puppy, I
had a lot more *respect* for him. I've never met his wife, but I've had
lots of interaction with him because he is home all day, some sort of
disability. He buried a dead cat for me awhile back. This is the only
black family on this road. It is also the only family who has a pit bull.
And he's gotten it's ears cropped, and it's the only family that owns a dog,
that is intending to leave it outside locked up in a kennel. The other
neighbors who own dogs, have *inside* dogs. I know all the dogs on the road
because I am drawn to dogs. So this has me pretty upset to say the least,
because I hate to see anybody hurt their dog, and I hate to see any dogs
that are relagated to the back yard only.

I even brought up with this guy yesterday, I said "you're not going to have
the dog inside??" "But living in the country it would be so much more
protection to have a dog that comes in at least at night time, wouldn't it?"
So he replies, "well, I'll probably leave it out of it's kennel at night, to
run the yard, then it should warn me if there are any prowlers around." I
did my best to try and instill in him the benefits of having a dog come
inside the house. It truly is a sweet little pup, it was very affectionate,
but for the constant bumping of it's ears and whimpering. My husband was
very upset when I told him about the cropped ears. I even said to the guy
"I thought the main reason for cropping ears on pitbulls was so they
wouldn't get injured when fighting?" To which he replied, 'no, it was for
appearance.' My daughter didn't know about the cropped ears, he must have
just had 'em done, because when I told her, she said "Oh mom, that puppy had
the cutest little ears when I saw him." ( She was heartbroken to hear
about it's ears being basically cut off. Because I really couldn't see much
of an ear left at all. (

*I* am a big, blonde Valkyrie!

For some reason you seem to think that the guy's race has
some bearing on his treatment of his dog. Hmmmmmm. I
wonder what that reason could be. Hmmmmmmmm.

Sensitive gay men! You're on a roll - tell me more!!!

Listen frick & frack, around here the only people who have pit bulls with
cropped ears fight those dogs. Or at the very least they do it to have
really BAD ASS-LOOKING dogs. Me, I don't like seeing a little puppy in pain
because some asshole chopped off it's ears. Now I'm guessing it wasn't a
vet that did this procedure. And the more I think about it, after reading
what pfoley said, I bet that poor little thing does have infected ears
because they looked pretty nasty to me. We have lots of dogs on this road,
most of the houses have a minimum of two dogs. And all the rest are either
hunting breeds, CBR, labs, or mixed breed dogs. One thing about the
country, I haven't seen any of the little or froo froo breeds out here.
Apparently nobody else has a need for a BAD ASS-LOOKING dog. I'm guessing
it's *legal* to chop a dogs ears off, and the county we live in now is
already over run with 40 dogs taking up space at the only shelter in this
county. 40 dogs confiscated at the latest dog fighting raid. *Those* dogs
have to be held and kept alive until all court proceedings are finished. So
there is no room at the shelter for any dogs that could possibly become
someones pet. So calling animal control isn't an option. Were I back in
the city, I'd probably have called animal control to come out and check the
puppies ears. The downside of rural living is nobody much cares about
situations like this.

Whatever. Anyway, I was just curious about how you managed to get to
adulthood sans prejudice. That's quite an accomplishment.

It took someone telling you this for you to figure it out?

Anyway, back to your pitch for sainthood: why do you think
the owner's race has a bearing on any of this?

What I picked up was, the fact that he had a pitbull and cropped its ears
and was going to make it live in the yard might have had a bearing on
whether or not td might be prejudiced against him.

Looked to me like she mentioned his race because with her, it was *not* a
factor. We've certainly had people in here for whom it would've been.

Reading the whole post, didn't look to me like she indicated she wasn't
prejudiced about *anything*. How in hell did you come up with that?
