Anybody got a feel for whether a belt or a cord R-leash might
be the more durable given very active pooches?

You'd do better to post this to *behavior.

That said, I would not walk a dog on a retractable lead unless she
is first well trained and well mannered on-lead. And then, I'd opt
for an all-belt type lead, as those are less likely to get tangled
if something *does* happen.
