Default Short Coat Lhasa Apso genetics

http://www.lhasa-apso-kasu.de/englis...ng_prapso.html

I thought I read once that the long coat of the Lhasa Apso is
genetically wire coat and thus the short coat would appear as a
recessive. Is that correct? Ordinarily short coat is dominant to
long, right?

Right and right. "Prapsos" are genetically long-coated (like about all
spaniels) but non-bearded, genotype ll whwh. Normal Lhasa Apsos are both
long-coated and bearded, ll Wh-. Bearded coat type is normally called
"wire", although the main difference between it and "normal" coat isn't the
hardness of hairs but the amount of extra fur on certain places, especially
on muzzle - thus "bearded" is a better term for it.

And yes, short coat ("true short") is dominant to long. Which can be seen
in breeds where it is ok to cross there two coat types like Chihuahua, St
Bernhard and Saluki. Or is breeds where the dogs are supposed to be short-
coated, but long-coated pups still appear from time to time, like GSD,
Pembroke Corgi and Malamute.

"Short coat from two long-coated parents" pups exist too, and most often
they are actually due to mismatings and not really from long-coated
parents. But some DNA tested such pups really exist, and they are caused by
a rare mutation which can turn the l allele back into "wild type allele" L.
I've heard of proven cases in Salukis and Afghans.

Oh thank you so much. Somehow I never learned there were two variables
involved
l and wh. I thought it was just wire, short, long.
