That probably went over better than when I introduced my then-
wife as my "first wife."

You could have said "current wife".

Shortly after Michael and I started our relationship, we were talking
with a couple of friends and Michael used the phrase "For my next trick"
about something. I said "I thought I was your next trick?" and he said
(without missing a beat) "You're my current trick."

Maybe you had to be there.
