I recently got a dog at the local shelter. He is a lovable 2yo golden
Lab (75lb). He is very sweet and smart. I am currently training him at home. Basic obedience using the food-lure method. It is working well. Unfortunately, he seems to be aggressive towards other dogs. I can't seem to get his attention whenever there are other dogs around. We live in the country. When I walk him down the road he is okay until we reach a yard with dogs. He basically loses all his wits and starts pulling and raising his hackles. It is really hard to regain control. Once he calms down he is fine again. HELP! |

If you can get his attention onn you (do you have a watch command?) give him praise and a treat. Try and keep his attention on you. Wave that treat under the nose and hold it up by your face (probably good to practice this without distraction first) - WATCH ME!. When he does say prase and treat. Move a step closer to the dog in the yard. Repeat. This method is slow but at some point you'll be able to tell him "Watch me!" and walk right on by the dogs in the yards. |

Getting his attention is nearly impossible, but I will keep at it.
One thing I have noticed is that PATIENCE is the key. I can only imagine how much it is ME that is actually being trained! I also need techniques for introducing him to other dogs. He is aggressive, but one time I muzzled him and then turned him loose with the neighbor's dog. After about 10 minutes I was able to remove the muzzle and they did fine together. I was thinking about muzzling him and then going to a dog park. I don't think he could injure any other dogs with the muzzle on. I am really trying to find a positive way to do this... |

JMO, but I think it would be better to intruduce him to other dogs on a more individual basis, rather than a dog park. I wouldn't do the 'dog park' thing until he's already been socialized to the point where you feel he is reliable. A rescue dog I have was a bit dog aggressive when we first got her. She is a rottie mix. I kept her leashed when intruducing her to other dogs, one at a time. As soon as she began to show any sort of aggression, I corrected her. If necessary, I put her down on her side in submission, until she was completely submissive. When necessary, I used a muzzle on her with certain dogs only. Left the muzzle on until I felt like she understood the connection between 'aggression and muzzle', keeping her onleash so I could immediately correct her for any sort of behavior that wasn't acceptable. There were a couple times, after I took the muzzle off, but still had her leashed, that she would begain to get very alpha again. As soon as I saw her do it, I told her NO, a couple times slapping that muzzle back on her again. It didn't take too long for her to learn which of the behaviors were negative and would result in the return of the muzzle. I didn't let her off leash until I was certain she understood what all this *meant*, cause and effect, until she understood that she was not to attack the other dog. td |

In response to Jerry Howe -
Wow. I can't decide if you are trying to help me or not - I'll let you know in a couple of days when I finish reading the lengthy replies. If you are, may I suggest CONDENSING your point a little, getting to it quicker, NOT calling so many people names and NOT YELLING SO MUCH. If you have a manual that I can download, then by all means provide a working link and I will check it out. And please - reply to the group and not my e-mail address - thanks for your help and cooperation. ps - if I went into a shoe store and they spent half the time telling me what A-HOLES the other shoe stores were, do you think it would make me want to shop there more? Other than that I do appreciate anybody's help I can get. Thanks |

Some dogs just aren't cut out to be in the dog park, no matter how much they are socialized with other dogs. Perhaps a local basic obedience class would help you develop skills and give you the opportunity to work around the distraction of other dogs? |
