That's for food, as well as potty breaks. If the dog is free fed, I'd
get him on a feeding schedule immediately. Food going in at set times
equals food coming out at (more or less) set times.

Other benefits are that you will know exactly how much your dog is
eating (makes it easy to monitor weight and adjust food accordingly).
You will also be better able to judge the dog's appetite, and so tell
when he's not feeling well. Appetite changes are sometimes the first
(or only!) indicator that a dog is unwell, so I find this extremely
important.
