Default Jack had surgery (long)

Hi y'all,
Jack had surgery again. He is/was Cryptorchid when he came to me
about a year and a half ago. He was emaciated. He had worms. He did
not seem to be very alert. He had that dull look in his eyes. Jubal
Early began to show dog aggression towards Buck. I actually considered
euthanizing Jack. I did not think of him as a candidate for another
home.
Jack became healthy. I obtained a coupon from the Humane Society for
50.00, to pay for the neuter portion of the bill. I went in to a Vet
that would take the coupon. (not my Vet) I was told that Jack's other
testicle was inguinal versus abdomenal. He had two incisions.
Everything seemed to go well.
I have mentioned a number of times, Jack has continued to learn, he is
now bright eyed and happy. Some things that he does, I have to
question, but then I think, I am just looking for trouble.
I spoke to my original Vet who had left the practice. I had called
her to ask who I should take Buck and my animals to, now that she is no
longer in practice. She became alarmed when I told her of Jack's
procedure and the Vet I had taken him to. She referred me to a Vet that
she likes. Jack had an ultrasound, and there was indication that the
other testicle was in his abdomen. She had heard of the same Vet doing
that before. I can't imagine it was an accident?
Anyway, Jack had surgery. He has quite a gash on his abdomen. He
leaked urine when I picked him up from the Vet, but I thought he was
excited, although he is not an excited pee-er. I saw a drop of urine
leak here at home, as he got up to go out to pee? I called the Vet, it
was late Friday, so I only got to talk to a tech, who advised me, to
bring him in if it continues.
He told me they had to cut his penis?
I am happy Jack is at home and doing ok. There have been no more pee
droplets. I thought he was peeing excessively at first, but he is ok
now, it was probably my imagination.
I am angry and frustrated. My former Vet/friend/adviser has suggested
that there is no point in raising Hell with the first Vet.
The Vet that performed this surgery, should have told me they cut his
penis and why. It must have been part of the procedure, as he had NO
trouble urinating prior. He does not appear to be deformed?
Anyway, I am grateful for my former Vet. She has spent hours on the
phone with me about Buck and Jack. I really do not want to wear out my
welcome mat with her. She has been so nice, and she may have saved
Jack's life. She told me of a testicle (abdomen) that was not removed
and grew so large, that the dog could not urinate or defecate. It was
discovered and removed, it was in an elderly dog that survived.
You know, I will speak to the first Vet to let him know the missing
testicle has been found.
I was molested by one of my Dr's. It almost went to court. He gave
up his license. There were six other women involved.
This is a small community, when it comes to Dr's and Vet's. I have
learned my lesson about speaking out about Dr's.
My Vet bill the first time around with the 50.00 coupon was 216.00.
This time it was closer to 300.00, and damn well worth it.
They probably write it on everyone's receipt, but they wrote, Jack was
Great!!!! He is a very nice dog.
I had alerted them that he is fine with our family dogs, but I did not
know how he would act etc etc....They put some kind of paper leash on
him and took off...I waited to see if there was any growling Nope.
This Vet say he is 1.5 years old. He has no tartar on his teeth.
(Nylabone) He weighs 77 pounds. They can't come up with a mix, they
just say he is a Bull dog.
Hello.....I have had him for 1.5 years He had his canine teeth (big
teeth) when he got here. The first Vet said he was 2, making him 3.5
now. The new Vet fainted when I said 3.5. He said no way.
I am so happy Jack is home, it has been lonely without him.

I remember that. That was when you showed up here, I think.

Anyway, Jack had surgery. He has quite a gash on his abdomen.

Yep. The large incision is because they had to hunt for the missing
testicle.

He told me they had to cut his penis?

I haven't a clue why they would need to do that.

The Vet that performed this surgery, should have told me they cut
his penis and why.

No kidding! I don't think it would be at all out of line to call
back later this week and ask them why they had to do that. There may
be a simple explanation, and you have every right to know.

She told me of a testicle (abdomen) that was not removed and grew
so large, that the dog could not urinate or defecate. It was
discovered and removed, it was in an elderly dog that survived.

She is absolutely correct. Testicles that are retained are a ticking
time bomb. They really do need to be removed.

This time it was closer to 300.00, and damn well worth it.

Yes, it was major surgery, so it would definitely cost more.

They probably write it on everyone's receipt, but they wrote,
Jack was Great!!!! He is a very nice dog.

Aw! It's always nice when other people appreciate your pets.

The new Vet fainted when I said 3.5. He said no way.

Ha! You are definitely doing something right!

I am so happy Jack is home, it has been lonely without him.

It sounds like you've had quite a roller coaster with getting Jack
neutered. I'm glad he's back home now and doing okay.

When Harriet was spayed, the vet nicked her bladder. Apparently,
even though she'd peed well for me that morning and again for the vet
before the procedure, she was holding enough back to make her bladder
a problem. Accidents happen. The important thing, to me, was that
the vet was honest about it and told me what to look out for. It
could be that something similar happened with Jack, or it may be that
they really did have to do something with his penis, though lord only
knows what.

What a story.
I have been wondering where you were and what you were up to lately, since
we haven't heard very much from you. I am so glad Jack is doing so well
now that his ordeal is over with. Is Jack a Bull Dog or a Pit Bull mix?
I am very sorry to hear about all your doctor and vet problems.
Here are two links on Cryptorchidism. In the second link, it did mention
that a dog with this problem could be grouchy as Jack had been before the
surgery.

The large incision was because they had to look for the testicle

That is sure enough the truth, they were not even sure the other
testicle was in there (as it should have been removed) when he was
neutered, the first time around.....

Sounds like it was quite a roller coaster, with getting Jack neutered.
I'm glad he's home and doing ok.

Thank you Shelly, that means a lot. I am really appreciating Jack these
days. I could have lost him. I am so grateful my former Vet gave me
the heads up. I called the clinic that did this procedure today. My
intention was to find out why his penis was cut. The Vet and Tech that
did his surgery were not in, so I will be calling back tomorrow. I have
read so many web sites I think I could have done the surgery, and no
where does it mention cutting the penis. (unless he was born deformed).

Does Harriet have any long term bladder problems that you know of? I
hope she never does.

Jubal Early went to the Neuter Commuter (county) for 20.00 anyone can
get their dog spayed or neutered, a chip, and a rabies shot. It is
ironic to think I could have done 25 dogs for what it cost to do Jack.
I have read about the condition since he arrived. I was surprised to
read it is more common in pure bred dogs than mixed breeds.
(cryptorchid) Maybe Jack is a show dog
I think I will send a copy of the bill to the first Vet, indicating his
other testicle has been found. I am afraid I will "go off" if I
approach him by phone or in person.

I did read those web sites you provided. No, Jack was never grouchy, he
has always been very docile and easy going. Actually, the first time he
was neutered, technically he was neutered, as the testicle that remained
inside was not able to produce sperm, so that part is good. (being
neutered at an earlier age) whatever his age is He is a Pit Bull mix
that is agreed on by all 3 Vets that have seen him.
I also read he could have genetic problems. I am not sure if they would
have had to present before me was neutered or if they can come on him
later in life. One more thing to ask my Vet.
Thanks for your interest and for sharing the information you came
across.
I really had to laugh about the part that said a testicle implant could
be done to make him appear to have two. I am trying to get rid of two
One of the genetic problems could be a trick knee? I have always
thought he was straight in the rear, but I think it as diddy explained
before, it is his breed/s.

So he's a keeper, then? [insert smart-assed smiley here]

Do let us know what you find out, because I'm curious.

Does Harriet have any long term bladder problems that you know of?
I hope she never does.

She had some short term problems with incontinence, but that cleared
up within a few weeks. Over the years, she's had random leaks, but
not frequent enough to warrant putting her on meds. I imagine that
time will come, though.

I feel so badly for Jack, he has been through it, and he is
sucking up the attention.

As well he should!

That's a good deal. We have a program (Pets Alive), mostly for low
income folks, but I guess anyone can use their services. Dog
spays/neuters are $55 and cats are $50, for both males and females.
They also do vax clinics, microchipping, HW testing, and sell flea
meds for slightly less than the local vets. It's not a bad deal, and
it provides vet care to animals that wouldn't otherwise get it.

It is ironic to think I could have done 25 dogs for what it cost
to do Jack.

Yeah, but you wouldn't want those 25 other dogs, would you?

I think I will send a copy of the bill to the first Vet,
indicating his other testicle has been found. I am afraid I will
"go off" if I approach him by phone or in person.

Now *that* sounds like something I'd do!

There are lots of ways this story could have turned out differently, and I'm
happy for the outcome you've had. I'd be sending your consultant vet a big
thank you!

That Jack got such a nice note from the vet speaks volumes about Jack's
temperment under trying circumstances.

Good boy Jack!

Shelly,
I am seriously getting upset. I am also trying to hang loose and be
grateful that Jack's botched surgery was discovered and repaired.
The tech that did all of the intake stuff called me back today. Not
the tech that assisted or was present at his surgery, not the one that
told me they had to cut Jack's penis to get at the missing testicle.
I inquired about some general questions I had, and then thanked her
for her kind comments about Jack. I then allowed her plenty of time to
talk about what a great dog he was and how well behaved he was I
really can't get enough of that because he just looks so ominous. He is
brindle with beady little eyes and he looks treacherous. He really is a
sweetheart, looks can be deceiving.
Anyway, in closing I asked her to ask Robbie the surgical vet tech to
please call. I explained I wanted to inquire as to why they had to cut
his penis? She did not miss a beat. She said we did not have to cut
his penis, the testicle was behind the bladder and we had to move the
penis. I explained about the pee-drops. She said that is not uncommon
when we spay a dog. (he wasn't spayed, but I get it, major surgery)
I know the difference between cut and move. Jack is fine or appears
to be. About 1/3 of his belly is cut open and the incision goes right
and what appears to be into his penis. I am going to leave it alone
until I go to have his stitches removed and try my question again. I am
happy he is well, but I want to know.
I can't help but wonder if there was any bladder problems in his
surgery, especially after hearing about Harriet's bladder being nicked
during a spay.
I will post if I ever get an answer, thanks for caring about Jack. He
is great.
Ya know, there are very few stray dogs around here. I blamed it on
the swiftness of the Buzzards. They are quite capable of dragging a
large dog from the side of the road to the woods, within hours, after
having been run over. I think I will give the credit to the Neuter
Commuter. They will do anyone's dog, regardless of your financial
ability for 20.00. I think they will do it for 15.00 if you are
disabled, or low income. How great is that?
BTW the neuter commuter is an actual bus that sets up all over the
county, so location isn't even an issue. They won't do dogs over 70 or
80 pounds and they have an age limit, but I can't remember what it is.
