Yellow Lab saves jogger from attack

By ANDRIA SIMMONS
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 10/23/07

Gwinnett police are investigating an attempted sexual assault on a
female jogger at Tribble Mill Park in Lawrenceville.

A 38-year-old woman said she was jogging during the late afternoon on
Oct. 12 when a young man walking in the opposite direction passed her.
The man then turned around and shoved her against a tree, where he
groped her and tried to put a hand up her shirt, the woman told
police.

Then the woman's 120-pound yellow Labrador retriever, Jack,
intervened. He chomped down on the attacker's thigh, prompting the man
to run away in the direction of the playground, a police report says.

Police say there have been no similar reports in area parks recently.
They have no leads on a suspect, said Cpl. Illana Spellman,
spokeswoman for the Gwinnett County Police Department.

In the meantime, Spellman advised "if you're going to be jogging at
dusk or later, make sure you're with someone, be aware of your
surroundings and make sure you have a cellphone with you at all
times."

She also warned joggers to avoid isolated areas and change their
patterns regarding jogging routes and the time of day they exercise to
avoid becoming a target.

A police report describes the suspect as a dark-skinned black male in
his late teens wearing a white T-shirt, dark baggy pants and a Dallas
Cowboys baseball cap with white stitched lettering.

UGH. A smaller dog could have done the job!

A coworker has a 100+lb Lab that suffers
from that condition. He's chubby, for sure, but he ain't
any kind of 100 pounds.

Someone wrote into the one of the epilepsy lists about her 105
pound lab. I agree that often size/weight gets exaggerated, but
a specific number like 105 makes me think that that one was
true.

Well damn, I thought I had a photo of my son in law with his HUGE chocolate
lab named Coda. Coda was a big boy, not fat, not over-weight, just a huge
block-headed chocolate lab. I have a photo of them somewhere, son in law in
on a chaise lounge with Coda on top of him, and they are nearly the same
size, except Coda had a bigger head than son in law. ;] He had to be well
over 100 pounds. Especially looking at Merlin at 80 pounds.

Yes - it's the "wow - that's a big dog - he must weigh 120#!" syndrome.

Sadly, we get a lot of Golden rescues in that are nearing that. It's
not pretty. But they sure aren't jogging either.

BYB dogs are often oversized. People who ignore the breed standard
don't do service to the breed or the individual dog's health.

Yes! And a lot of people see oversized as a good thing.
But still, it's really common for people not to recognize a
fat dog as fat (especially if it's theirs). An extreme case
is that Rottweiler that was on fat dog night on AP; the
owner thought he was beautiful but he was so fat he was
immobilized.

With all these people running around saying that their dog
is at an ideal weight you wouldn't expect to see so many fat
dogs in the world, but there you are.
