Hi all,
I gave Kiba his monthly dose of Advantage yesterday. I may have rushed the delivery as he ended up with three greasy marks on his back, that he didn't get the first time I used it. I don't know if he licked any. Anyway, later in the afternoon, Kiba began acting, well, odd. He became very nervous and skittery. He wouldn't come to me, no matter what, even with the bribe of a cookie. (This dog is a treat SLUT!! "Will Work for Food" is putting it mildly!) Kiba is a total mommy's dog, and rarely leaves my side, so I was bewildered. He had acted the same way a few months ago when he heard something disturbing on a DVD we were watching. I still don't know what it was, the movie itself, or the machine noise, but when we turned it off, he relaxed a bit, but still didn't want to come in the living room for a little while. He was spooked, like a dog can get on Halloween, hearing fireworks. Yesterday, Kiba was doing the same again, but waay worse. He sidled away from me, and wouldn't stay in the house. He kept asking to go out, over and over and over, till I thought I'd go nuts. When he was in the house, he paced. Finally he just stayed outside, for a long time (to me). I went out and sat on the steps, and talked quietly to him as he sat by the fence, but he wouldn't come near me. If I had seen someone's else's dog do that, I would have thought they had just beaten him! I didn't want to stress him anymore, so I decided to ignore him. Completely. I didn't look at him, talk to him or interact with him for the rest of the evening. I left the back door open so he could come in and out as he wished, cold as it was. It was very hard not to look at him as I moved around the house, but if I didn't look at him, he didn't run. He stayed out of my way, but did start to follow me around, albeit gingerly. I ignored him. (Very hard to do, but it seemed to help calm him.) I gave him a travel calm tablet but I don't know if it helped or not. When my husband came home from work at midnight, I told him to try to ignore Kiba, and explained what was going on. He was concerned, but tried to be as calm as he could. He wondered how he could ignore that little darlin', but he didn't have to worry. Kiba didn't do his usual, "Oh my God, Daddy's home! I can't believe he came back! I'm so glad to see him!!" dance anyway. He approached him, and even sat on the couch beside him, but definitely wasn't himself. I even had Paul put him in his crate, instead of me, when it was bedtime. I let him out after I was in bed, to see if he would come to bed with me. He did, as usual, and I started to feel a little better. (I know, I know, it has nothing to do with me, but I couldn't help feeling hurt). Usually at bedtime I let Kiba spend a bit of time on the bed with me, sometimes just a few minutes, another, maybe a couple of hours. He usually gets put back in his crate when he lays on my head one too many times. (I need my sleep!) Anyway, today he's totally himself, maybe even more so, full of beans and ready for action. So, could this have been a reaction to the Advantage? He needs the flea treatment as he's chewing his belly hairs into felt, he's so itchy, and I don't want him to be uncomfortable. I really can't think of anything else that might have caused this peculiar behaviour. Thanks, Phyrie -- Kiba the Cav's Pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/phyrie/...758930/detail/ |

Cubbe hates to get wet so we assume she hates the feeling of anything in her fur. I imagine Advantage feels like a wet spot on her back that doesn't go away for several hours. She acts like we're torturing her when she hears the medicine come out of the package. (All dog brushes and medicines are kept in one drawer in a bathroom. She doesn't mind people using the bathroom, but she knows when the drawer is opened and becomes immediately suspicious.) She scrambles under the futon, etc. The first time we gave her Advantage, her reaction wasn't as strong as Kiba's, but she was edgy, and she had some diarrhea. We wondered if the medicine might sting or tingle. I asked the veterinarian about it. He said it doesn't feel like anything except oily and that he'd never heard of that reaction from Advantage and guessed that the symptom was some passing diarrhea from some other reason. It went away after a day, and we didn't worry about it. We've taken to catching her by surprise to give her the Advantage. For an hour or so afterwards, she watches her back. (Some white space in the form of paragraph breaks would help me read your posts.) --Lia |

I ended up washing it off later that day and he was fine. Now I only use Frontline Plus on him and he doesn't have any problems. Cali is fine with K9 Advantix or Frontline so I use whatever is on sale or cheaper (I never saw a difference in how they work). |

I believe this is a normal behavior. My dog does that too.
Advantage has a particular smell that dogs will "by instinct" try to get rid of... and they do this by rubbing themselves against stuff.... like carpets, towels, grass etc. Rei. http://goodpuppy.blogspot.com/ On Oct 27, 8:26 am, "MauiJNP" wrote: I gave Kiba his monthly dose of Advantage yesterday.
