Halloween can be hazardous to your dogs. I never eat chocolate but to
appease the kiddies who stop by on this hallowed day, I have a bunch of bags of chocolate candy ready to be handed out. Earlier today I had a brain fart and left a bag on the kitchen table. Anything left on the kitchen table is fair game for my 10 month old Border Collie. So I left for an hour and came back to see that she ate half the bag of Nestles crunches. Luckily it took awhile for her to open all the little packages but she managed to eat about 14 little bars or about 7 oz. of chocolate. Eleven unopened packages littered my kitchen floor. After an initial panic set in I searched the web and found this site. http://www.apogeecomgrp.com/drkevin/chocolate.html At most she ate 7oz x 60mg theobromine/oz = 420mg of theobromine. According to the web site the lethal dosage is 250 - 400mg/kg and Zoe weighs in at around 30lbs now or almost 14kg. Therefore I think she'll be OK. She seems OK now. Food for thought. I'm sure Halloween must be a terrible time for dog poisoning. Normally I'm very careful about making sure Zoe doesn't get into anything dangerous but it only takes one little over sight. I think if I had 5 bags out there and gave her enough time she would have eaten them all. Luckily all chocolate is out of my house after today. Here's some pics of Zoe the Coyote. http://www.brandylion.com/gallery/Zoe |

My dogs think the wrapping is the best part. Zoe is beautiful, and I'm glad she's okay. Karla |
