Default Lhasa Apso put to sleep because of diabetes

An unhealthy lifestyle causes type 2 diabetes. Carbs are
indirectly implicated because of the link between obesity
and type 2. But it's not carbs themselves that have been
linked, it's obesity. And lack of exercise.

Linked, but not necessarily the cause. Genes are thought to play an
even larger part than diet, obesity, and exercise. The problem is that
when you combine crappy genes with obesity, lack of exercise, and poor
diet, you are likely to get diabetes. The best educated guess is that
there is a strong genetic component that's affected by behavioral and
environmental factors.

In a situation like that it's easier to blame some external
factor (like, say, oh I dunno - carbs?) than it is to take
personal responsibility for getting one's health under
control.

An intelligent person will do both. I've got crappy genes when it comes
to diabetes. I don't want to develop it, so I do what I can to stop
that from happening. Even so, I know that a serious illness can tip the
balance, no matter what else I do. It's no excuse to throw up your
hands and be a defeatist, though.
