The level of cyanide in the root is hugely dependent on A) cultivar and
B) growing conditions. Some are safe to eat raw (or after soaking).

It has cyanide in it which the Mayan Indians used for their blow
darts.


Also, I'm truly interested in a citation for the Maya having used the
plant as a poison. I know they made extensive use of the root for food,
but don't know about the other use, and I suspect it involved the leaves
of the plant, not the root.
