Default Adopting at Christmas

A local humane society doing it right:
http://www.cochranehumane.ca/index2.htm

Not a lot of details on the web page, but finally someone is
realising that Christmas holiday schedules often make a good
time to adopt.

Our local shelter does just the opposite. It has the view that those that
adopt at christmas just haven't thought things through and aren't going to
make the life long commitment. They shut down adoptions starting 10 days
before Christmas.

That was the point of my post - most do.

Do you think that's a good idea?

The shelter I work with participates in the "Home for the Holidays"
promotion. Especially for the adult dogs, getting them into a home for
Christmas/Kwanzaa/Hanukkah/whatever is a very good thing. I take off
time over the holidays, as does DH, so puppyhood at this time of year is
pretty good. I could do without the dark and cold, but other than
that...... Fortunately Marcie doesn't mind either.

I don't think it's the best time to buy a dog or puppy, but when a dog is
adopted out of a shelter into a home, at any time, I consider that one lucky
dog.

good deal. i know for a lot of people, there's a good bit
of down time over the holidays that would make it much
easier to deal with helping a new dog adjust to a new home.

That was the intent.

for me it's the opposite- i only get the actual holidays
off, it's usually very busy at work, plus i'm busy with
holiday stuff.

The adoption process would have weeded you out, then, at least
for right now.

i don't agree with pets being given as (surprise) gifts,
nor do i agree with spur of the moment pet adopting, but
that's a year-round concern.

Yup, and this shelter still requires that the entire household
visit. The only thing it's doing differently from regular
adoption procedures is staying open at Christmas and
emphasizing (and rejecting for) the pet as a present thing.

I think that it's a great approach, and it's certainly gotten
a lot of local media coverage.

I got Harriet right before Thanksgiving, and the timing was partly
because of the holiday. I knew that I'd have five days off to get
her settled, and more, if it was needed.

Kudos for your local HS for looking at individual adopters'
situations, and for allowing for the fact that conventional wisdom
doesn't always hold true.

I thing if they would just show a photo of one shelter dog or cat including
a few lines about the animal in the local newspapers a week, I bet they
would have a much better chance at finding homes for these animals. Instead
of waiting for the people to go to the shelter, why not go to the people
through the newspapers, and show them what is out there looking for a home.

Our local newspaper does this - every Sunday it has a listing of
all animals at the shelter and in foster care, with a thumbnail
about each one and a "pet of the week" photo. It's a small town/
small shelter - typically fewer than 20 pets are described.

I think that is the way to tweak interest in a dog or cat. They see a photo
and think it's cute and want to see it then at the shelter. I think it's a
good idea.

The strategy I posted has received a ton of local media
attention.
