I posted a bit ago my 14 year old Beardie has been diagnosed with
Kidney Disease. Her levels are not too bad but she is underweight and that is my biggest concern right now - just getting her to eat. I am trying everything - dog food, human food, making up recipes etc - but she just doesn't seem intersted in food. At first I was making headway with just some boiled chicken and hamburger and even some steak chunks. She even started eating the combnations of meat and rice I came up with. But that is waning so I got Salmon oil to squirt on top of her food [ I had to order it on line] I understand that it will sometimes encourage a better appetite and it's good for her. But it's not working. My cat loves though. I also read that green tripe may help. Sounds just awful to me and I read it can smell pretty bad. But I want to try it. However it's not something I can find here so I have to order that on line too. Ordering just one can to try is expensive and I am wasting a lot of money on food she won't eat. It's my hope that maybe I can find samples. Perhaps some dog food companies have samples but where do I look? I know many of you here have better connections than I do as you may be breeders or just someone who has been facing this issue with their dog for awhile. I got some great recipes for home made food for her and now I hope someone here can help me with this. Does anyone know where I can get some samples? Thanks for any leads you can offer as am getting so heart broken over this and I know there has to be something I haven't tried and this may be it. ~Gillis |

Is the food warm? ........Did you ask the vet about pepto or something similar? Is she on anything to take care of the hyperacidity? I think there's other drugs to help improve appetite. I think Mary mentions them at www.dogaware.com Never used them so don't know. buglady take out the dog before replying |

You can buy a single container for $2.50 or the freeze dried for about $8. Shipping needs a bigger order, thought. If you're local to any of these places, perhaps you can go onsite and get a smaller portion. Paws also sells at dog shows in the area, if there's a show in your area, maybe there will be something there you can get a smaller portion of. I remember when our first lab was diagnosed with kidney disease. It's a heartbreaking situation. I wish you well. Sue and Atty |

: I also read that green tripe may help. Sounds just awful to me and I read it can smell pretty bad. But I want to try it. However it's not something I can find here so I have to order that on line too. Green trip is the stomach lining of cows, sheep or deer. I have a friend who takes all mine when I butcher. Since there is only one per animal, they can be difficult to get. If you are a hunter, collect it yourself. If you have friends that are hunters, or farmers, or butchers, ask them for it. I can't imagine shipping the stuff. So preserving it through shipping would be the hard part. And expensive. So obtain it locally. Ordering just one can to try is expensive and I am wasting a lot of money on food she won't eat. It's my hope that maybe I can find samples. Perhaps some dog food companies have samples but where do I look? I can't imagine how that would actually be good for a dog in renal failure though. |

"diddy" none wrote in message . .. High protein content .........Protein isn't the issue, phosphorus is the issue with renal failure, unless the dog is uremic. Tripe is low in phosphorus. To the OP - did you check all of the sources listed here? http://www.dogaware.com/kidney.html#tripe buglady take out the dog before replying |

I love my dogs and will do just about anything for them, more than most (but same or less than many, I'm sure). I just can;t bring myself to do it. Life or death? No problem - I can deal with anything. "general well being"? Sorry - I can't do it. Any more than I will make calves liver because DH likes it. I think you can get used to anything. Back when I was feeding canned mackeral regularly it started to smell pretty good after awhile. Granted, that's not as stanky as green tripe, but at first I found it pretty repellent. But still, if there's no reason for you to feed the stuff I'm not sure there's much point in acclimating yourself. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
