I talked with my vet about this a few months ago. She
doesn't like to do it for several reasons, not the least of
which is that there's risk of damaging enamel if a dog gets
fussy. It's also the case that it's extremely difficult to
get under the gumline and attend to those pockets,
particularly if there's inflammation (most of us have been
there, right? It hurts). If there's tartar that she can
chip off on the tooth surface without anesthesia she'll do
that but she feels pretty strongly that it's no substitute
for a real cleaning.
