I do not like neutrals, I'll tell you that. I wholeheartedly approve the use of non-neutrals! (Not that you need my approval, of course, but since this *is* the rpd* communal bathroom, I thought I'd mention it.) I would also like to incorporate some glass tiles, because I love them so, but they are frightfully expensive so I can only use them as accents. Glass tile is gorgeous, but yes, pricey. Since you're wanting to do accents, be sure to ask about seconds, off-colors, etc. (assuming you're going to a real, live tile shop). Small lots of cool tile can be gotten at a discount that way. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

Unless you're planning on living in the house forever (or a long enough period of time that a second re-do is in the cards), neutral is the smarter way to go. You can always do interesting things with tile instead (arrange them creatively, introduce borders or accents) to make it not-blah, and of course, paint is your friend. Much easier to change avocado green paint than avocado green tile. I would also like to incorporate some glass tiles, because I love them so, but they are frightfully expensive so I can only use them as accents. I like glass tiles in moderation. Especially after this amazing transformation that will make it my dream house. I actually don't think about resale value, although having a whirlpool tub should be a selling factor. We're making that whole strange room into a much less strange room, and I bought the place with the strange room, so I feel someone will like my little gem of a house, if it ever comes to that. What makes the room strange, you ask? It is the most gigantic bathroom on the planet, only without enough in it to make it a sensible size. The laundry is in there. You walk in and you don't really know what kind of room it is. Seriously, it's ridiculous. It will look much better with a giant tub in there and the laundry machines behind doors. (or a long enough period of time that a second re-do is in the cards), neutral is the smarter way to go. Much easier to change avocado green paint than avocado green tile. Speaking of avocado green, which I'm actually not going to do but this is a similar problem, you should see the fixtures in the upstairs bathroom -- they are a very peculiar shade of blue. Argh. White fixtures are the way to go -- then paint and tile to get color. I'm sure the non-neutral tile I choose will be extremely tasteful, and will look like crap a decade or 2 from now. Such are the vagaries of fashion. I would also like to incorporate some glass tiles, because I love them so, but they are frightfully expensive so I can only use them as accents. I like glass tiles in moderation. Otherwise it looks like something Mariah Carey would enjoy wearing (term used loosely). I'm a glitzy kind of gal myself. On one of the home shows, I once saw a kitchen backsplash in glass tile, and it made me want voluminous amounts of glass tile. In other exciting news, there are paint swatches on my walls now, and I love the blue for the living room, and I seem to have picked the perfect yellow for the kitchen. I'm less excited about the peach color that will go in the den and the loft, so I might have to look at the paint book again. It's looking a little pink for me... I was thinking more apricotish. -- Catherine & Zoe, Queenie, & Max, 3 black dogs of varying sizes & Rosalie the calico cat www.ourladyofperfection.blogspot.com |

Another tip - make sure you find out their return policy. One tile shop we dealt with had a restocking fee and required that all excess/incorrect tiles be returned within 30 days. This may not be a problem for you, if you're having a contractor install them right away, but it was for us because Hubster was doing the work. Slowly. (The salesman ordered 4 cartons more than we needed, even though we had given him exact measurements. And we didn't check his calculations carefully. We got our refund, but it was a battle.) White fixtures are the way to go -- then paint and tile to get color. I dunno. I kind of like colored fixtures, assuming the color is good. I was watching Moving Up the other day, and they had an old bathroom with green tile and pink fixtures. I thought the fixtures and tile were lovely (even though I'm not a pink fan). I would have given the non-tile parts a coat of paint and called it good, but the new owners gutted the place. It was okay in an upscale hotel sort of way, but I thought it was boring and soulless. We won't speak of avocado green, as it's a relative of puke green and therefore I have nothing but love for it. I'm a glitzy kind of gal myself. On one of the home shows, I once saw a kitchen backsplash in glass tile, and it made me want voluminous amounts of glass tile. I either saw that show or one like it (I'm deeply addicted to home improvement porn). The glass backsplash was *gorgeous*. I saw a shower floor done with it, though, and was kind of meh about it. I'm less excited about the peach color that will go in the den and the loft, so I might have to look at the paint book again. It's looking a little pink for me... I was thinking more apricotish. Peach is tough. It can end up looking fleshy, which can be kind of disturbing. -- Shelly http://www.cat-sidh.net (the Mother Ship) http://esther.cat-sidh.net (Letters to Esther) |

I like my house just fine, and the yard and location even better, but the reason I'd probably never move is because I *hate* moving. Unless I have to, I won't move. What makes the room strange, you ask? It is the most gigantic bathroom on the planet, That is a good thing. I hate these 5 x 6 bathrooms where there is barely enough room to turn around without hitting something. only without enough in it to make it a sensible size. The laundry is in there. You walk in and you don't really know what kind of room it is. Seriously, it's ridiculous. It will look much better with a giant tub in there and the laundry machines behind doors. Definitely sounds like a better plan. I wish my laundry was upstairs, next to the bathroom. All the dirty laundry is up there, so why the hell do I have to schlep all that crap up and down stairs? Of course, I have no one to Speaking of avocado green, which I'm actually not going to do but this is a similar problem, you should see the fixtures in the upstairs bathroom -- they are a very peculiar shade of blue. Argh. White fixtures are the way to go -- then paint and tile to get color. I don't think I've ever run across colored fixtures I've liked. Metals are cook, though. I'm sure the non-neutral tile I choose will be extremely tasteful, and will look like crap a decade or 2 from now. Such are the vagaries of fashion. You could end up in one of those 'what were they thinking' segments on HGTV, 20 or 30 years from now. For now however, I believe you owe us pictures of your rpd* communal bathroom. I'm a glitzy kind of gal myself. On one of the home shows, I once saw a kitchen backsplash in glass tile, and it made me want voluminous amounts of glass tile. I betcha it looked nice because it was restricted to the backsplash, and not all over every surface. I've seen and liked kitchen backsplashes with glass and liked them. I'm yet to see a bathroom full of the stuff and not thought that it was too much of a good thing. BTW, one of my all-time favorite kitchens was done in copper and a black granite (with blue/grey flecks). VERY seriously eye catching, but I suspect you aren't supposed to do any cooking in those. I'm less excited about the peach color that will go in the den and the loft, so I might have to look at the paint book again. It's looking a little pink for me... I was thinking more apricotish. At least you don't have a whole roomful of that stuff. You'll find something nice, I'm sure. Suja |
