I just saw that a small, friendly sleddog race north of Calgary has been postponed - is that due to lack of snow? We're having the usual problems here, too. The Craftsbury True Companion Race has been cancelled due to lack of snow for the third year running and the Stratford Night Riders' race has been postponed. Sandwich Notch was cancelled due to lack of volunteers, probably because of waning enthusiasm because of what's going on with the climate. It's another bad one! But I would have thought Alberta would be in pretty good shape. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

I don't know why a sledddog race would be scheduled for anytime other than February and March unless it's closer to the mountains (Rockies or the foothills). Which race is this? http://www.canmoresleddograces.com/ They should have been fine, being so close to Banff. I guess that all of snow which the ski hills have been enjoying missed the Canmore area. -- --Matt. Rocky's a Dog. |

It also looks like the race has had a short but rocky (NO PUN INTENDED) history, thanks to the weather. Which race is this? The Rosebud Run: http://www.rosebudrun.ca. I think it's pretty cool to have races relatively close to major cities, although it's a mixed bag for the mushers. There are purebred races in Vaughan, ON (Toronto northern suburb) every year and I feel kind of obligated to go up, but I don't want to stay with my dogs in a suburban hotel and while various family have said I could park my truck at their places that would be absolutely crazy, not to mention really hard on the dogs (tons of youngsters badgering 'em). But still, I think it's nice that city people get a chance to see something like that. The extent to which humans are becoming alienated from nature is pretty disheartening, and stuff to counteract that is always good. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
