Anyway it's soo funny I think part of the problem, to the extent that there is one, is that before ubiquitous connectivity we tended not to hear all that much from people we really didn't find interesting. They were easier to avoid. Anyway, this particular spammer reminds me of a new faculty member who was hired when I was in graduate school. At a department party, to introduce himself he walked up to a friend of mine and said "I hear you're an interesting person. I'm an interesting person, too!" My ten year old is fond of searching for funny dog stories. There's a million of them out there. Nice to meet you, too. (the)duckster |

Framed in behavioral terms, behavior which is rewarded tends to increase. Either way, it doesn't strike me as a particularly good idea to reward drive-by posters who have no interest in participating in what used to be a discussion group, whether those drive-by posters are spammers trying to get! rich!! quick!!! by driving up ad views on their no-reason-to-exist "blogs" or people who want votes for their really cute puppy that's participating in a contest or people trying to pimp their videos. Rewarding that behavior attracts more of it. There are certainly plenty of places to go to find adorable puppy videos but not so many places where you can find substantive discussions about dog behavior. Granted, there are a few regular posters here who have no apparent interest in dogs, but they're the exception and they're a problem, too. Anyway, rewarding drive-bys: bad for the newsgroup. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Is this a moderated newsgroup? If it is, I must be more computer saavy then I thought as it appears I got past security. Having no recollection of seeing a login/password page, might you be kind enough to post a link to it? I own four dogs myself and am keenly interested in the subject matter. TIA Kind regards, (the)duckster |

Plus, as I explained, you're encouraging more spammers, more drive-bys, more off-topic, and more behavior that makes this newsgroup less useful for discussing dogs rather than more. But hey, if you don't give a **** about that kind of thing then you just don't give a ****. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |
