Give him something else to do when ever the door bell rings. Come to the door and sit is always a good one. You can train it by having an 'accomplice' stand outside, ring the bell. Don't let them in until you can get your dog to sit. You may have to start with just getting them to walk to the door, sit, stay, *then* doorbell rings. You may also, depending on the dog have to vary the 'reward' you give him. Some dogs, seeing the new person is the reward, others need a little more. Do this a dozen or so times, and he should start to get the idea. You have to be consistent though, and make sure that you don't open the door until you have him under complete control. Dale |

You can train active behavior that's incompatible with barking. One we used on Oppie when he was going to have throat surgery and would not be "allowed" to bark for six weeks afterwards was this: Being a retriever, it was very easy (a long time ago) to train him to "get the xxx!" (sock, in his case), and he doesn't bark when he's carrying a sock in his mouth. So whenever he was likely to bark (us arriving home, dinner time, getting ready for a walk), we'd tell him to "get the sock" and then reward him for bringing it to us, and then give it right back to him. You might train your dog to retrieve a sock/toy and then sit, and after that is well established, train him to do so when the "command" is the doorbell or a knock on the door.
