Chiming in on the chorus: It entirely depends on the individual dog(s) and cat(s), AND - very important- on the ability of the owners to properly introduce and supervize them. Does it matter if the cat is an adult or kitten? Again, that depends on the individuals involved - dog, cat, and humans. . Personally, were I in your place and thinking of a cat, I would FIRST take steps to teach the dog about cats by arranging introduction to dog-savvy adult cats outside the home. Once some basic socialization was in place, I'd be looking for a dog-savvy young adult cat. But that's me. Wouldn't a cat tend to leave the yard and spend most of its time elsewhere rather than at home with the dog? Not if it's an indoor cat, and/or isn't allowed out unless humans are home. |

It is common, on the Siberian mailing lists, to see someone post that their dog had been great with cats all its life, right up until the day it killed their cat. Substitute "Jack Russell Terrier", and I've seen this exact conversation many a time. If a dog has full prey drive - IOW retains the full instinct to follow through to the kill, which most Siberians (and most JRTs) do - and the prey drive is strong and gets triggered the right way, the dog(s) may not be aware it's their own cat that they're going after. |

We have a 7 month old female Rottweiler mix. She has everything except for enough companionship. We just do not have enough time in our busy work schedules to spend as much time with her as she would like. She would love to be with us every minute of every day. And we are reluctant to adopt another dog at this time. I faintly remember that a friend used to have a dog and a cat, and they were inseparable. Is that common or are they usually enemies? Does it matter if the cat is an adult or kitten? Wouldn't a cat tend to leave the yard and spend most of its time elsewhere rather than at home with the dog? Are there other pet alternatives that would work better? A friend once had a pet pig that she was very fond of. Thanks for any suggestions. From what I have seen, dogs tend to be much more accepting of newcomers than cats are. A kitten growing up in the household will tend to be more tolerant. Adult cats have a tough time getting settled in a new home anyway; a dog just complicates things. Of course, any individual cat or dog could behave completely differently than what most other animals will do. Some breeds of cat seem to tolerate just about anything. Ragdolls cannot be trusted outside, for example. They will walk right up to a coyote and try to be friends. -- Waddling Eagle World Famous Flight Instructor |
