Are you acquainted with Peter? Are you Peter? Inquiring minds want to know. Kathy hehe, I think I'd like this peter guy. Yes, growing up in NM our dogs did ride in the back of the truck, and they loved it! So did the kids though. I grew up in NM, too, and as a child I SAW a dog get thrown from the back of a pickup truck when the truck swerved to avoid something in the road. It wasn't pretty. The fact that the state is full of idiots who can't think through the likely consequences of putting unrestrained dogs or children in the back of a pickup - even if they do "love it!" - doesn't mean that it was ever a smart thing to do. From my experience, country dogs are much happier and more healthy. We only visited the vet a handful of times, and usually to remove porcupine needles from their faces. Would you rather live in a padded cell, wearing bike helmet, nibbling on power bars and eating your fiber cereal, enjoying the ultimate safety, or travel the world in an old yacht and face the risks of life? I'd choose the later. c |

From my experience, country dogs are much happier and more healthy. We only visited the vet a handful of times, and usually to remove porcupine needles from their faces. Oh noooooo! I live in the 'burbs, so I don't know what to choose. *I* know - I'll choose to treat my dogs like beloved pets and family members. Not children, not "locked" in crates for hours, but not under a weird "country folk" impression that "all dogs should run free and never get preventative care/training/supervision/containment". Life is full of risks. That doesn't mean throwing all caution to the wind and standing in front of the oncoming train makes any sense at all. -- Janet Boss www.bestfriendsdogobedience.com |

But I'd never *foolishly* risk my dogs' lives. By the way, I bet you'd want that old yacht to be seaworthy, wouldn't you? Why take *foolish* risks, right? I'd choose the later. A rational person evaluates the tradeoffs. There is considerable risk to riding your dog in the bed of your truck, and no real benefit unless you're insufferably prissy and afraid of a little dirt and a little dog hair. -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

At that point certain wolves learned the benefit of living with a pack of humans. After that we bred them to favor the more mild mannered, and picked the traits we wanted. So initially, yes they were our protectors and we favored the guard types. Or I suppose you could believe there was a Chiahuahua and a Great Dane on Noah's Ark. For God's sake, I hope there was a dog trainer on the ark too ![]() c |
