Hi, I have a fouryear old flat. He behaves very nicely in the apartment and never barks there. When we go to our country house, where he can run around free in the garden, which is fenced, he barks almost constantly. It seems that he is begging for our attention wanting him to play with him all the time. We can never do any work in the garden without him interfering wanting our attention. He also barks at everybody passing by on the road. If we look him inside the house he just continues barking for hours. We understand that we should not obey him by playing with him all the time but it is so frustrating hearing him bark while all other dogs are behaving nicely. So what is the best way to teach not to bark in the countryside? He never does it in town! Gunilla |

I suppose she could spend hundreds for dog training class, then figure out she needs shock collar, which essentially teaches dog same thing - don't bark. Costs around $50. What training? Please, it's a simple battery operated collar: you put it on, you watch it work, you enjoy life. When LED stops illuminating you replace batteries. The shock is minimal and nothing to worry about. There are 2 different types that frequent this group: the high falutin city folk that believe dogs should be treated like children, and the answer for any problem is "enroll them in class and spend $300 to teach them not to do it, and put them in time-out, but be sure their paw socks are on before stepping outside if under 50 degrees, etc." Or the old school style like me: treat a dog like a dog. Be the pack leader, a snout slap here and there works wonders, never be greedy with the REAL people food left-overs, but don't let them demand it. Barking is in our dog's genes. For thousands of years we bred dogs to be our guards, and now we want to change them to be our buddies only, in 100 years timespan. Isn't gonna happen, but at least we have electricity ![]() c |

For thousands of years we bred dogs to be our guards, Um, no. It depends on the breed - dogs were bred to do a pretty wide variety of jobs. Not to mention that the barkiest dogs tend to be from the herding breeds.
