I wonder why

What's "this upset?" I think it's offensive and I said so.
But I'll tell you what - if I were Paul's friend's wife I
would be upset, not because of the insult to me in
particular but because of the general contempt for women
expressed through that particular choice of words.

When I was in high school right after the schools were
integrated, during some down time in gym class some black
girls were standing at the end of the track, singing and
dancing. And a white classmate leaned over to me and said
"They want to be called 'Afro-American' but some of them are
just 'n*'." So don't even *think* about pulling that "it's
not all women, it's that woman" ****.

A sort of funny comment.

Not so much, actually.

I suppose so. Is there some sort of required amusement level? I
guess I didn't read the rules carefully enough.

YMMV, but I draw the line at misogynist bullshit.

It was Paul's friend who referred to dogs and bitches (why
don't you have a problem with men being called dogs?)

They weren't. "Dog" in this context = ugly woman.

Not all people have quite the same visceral reaction to the word as you.
You seem to be highly sensitive to the word "bitch". I have no idea why,
but to me it's not that big a deal. I know full well that I can be as
bitchy as all get out at times. I have described myself that way if I'm
feeling out of sorts or in greater than usual pain on a given day. So we
disagree about how offensive the term "bitch" is. Fair enough. You still
are ignoring what it was about the comment I found mildly amusing. I
couldn't care less what Paul's friends think about their spouses. I don't
know them, never will, and wouldn't try to change their opinion of their
loved ones if I did. That wasn't the point of his post. And I made it more
than clear that it wasn't the use of the term "bitch" I found funny, but you
don't want to see that.

So no one else is allowed to read it that way? Because given Paul's
history, that's absolutely what I think he meant.

Yep, it's not possible to object to something without being "upset"
or having a physical reaction to it. WTF?! Do you even know what
the word visceral means?

Well, *DUH*, and lots of people have no objection to all
sorts of sexist/racist/antisemitic/homophobic epithets. My
classmate was totally comfortable with the word "n*gger,"
too, and I would hope it would not lead you to think that
that word was more acceptable because of Linda's casual use
of it.
