Default If I Only Had a Heart

The brave Norwegian Elkhound. Bold Fearless, Noble hunter of Moose, Bear,
Guardian of the farm from Wolves, and herder of caribou. It takes a lot of
cajones to do all that. My Tuck showed all the heritage of being worthy of
his Norwegian ancestry, But a temporary boarder got the best of him. I
have pasture in abundance, and need it cleaned off a bit before my old
horse founders. So a friend, housing some very thin, and hungry horses in
great need of "DR. GREEN" that she is fostering for the humane society
asked me if i had some pasture to spare, which I did.

Yesterday the Humane Society fosters came over. One small 2 year old horse
that looks like a 5 month old weanling, and a donkey, so plastered in mud,
that they both suffer rain rot, and they have great sores. Finale, my old
mare was delighted when the horse arrived and adopted her instantly. But
she had never seen a donkey before, and decided whatever it was, was
certainly the devils work. It was not to be trusted!

So Finale stole the Donkey's stablemate, and spent the day making sure he
never got on the same side of the pasture with her. In frustration, the
Donkey tried to keep Tuck out of the pasture too. EVIL THING!

Now Tuck is very good at evasion of horses that are trying to stomp him
into the dirt and has always seemed to enjoy the dangerous game. But one
cross look from the donkey made a believer of him, and he hightailed out of
the pasture never to be seen there again.
I always felt Tuck was fearless, but when it comes to donkeys, he's a real
coward!

They took the donkey home today, (but left the horse) and life is once
again restored at the Tuck family farm.

Discretion is the better part of valor, or so they say. I've heard
that donkeys are not very tolerant of dogs. I've heard of them
attacking and even killing dogs. I know several folks with horses who
keep a donkey, too, to protect them against loose dogs and coyotes.

So, it's probably just as well that Tuck did not challenge the donkey!

The horse arena where I train has an evil old donkey. Dogs and
humans have learned to stay away. Though, somewhat oddly, when
a bunch of us humans were recruited to haul a horse from where
she'd rolled under the fence, the donkey didn't bother us.
