Default Breed Ban - Now it's our turn

Last night our city council jumped into some dumbassery with the first
reading of breed banning legislation. They are targeting "pit bulls"
and cana presarios.

The auditorium was PACKED with people from all over who wanted to
educate council on the error of their ways. We had been there for
another reason (historic preservation districts - which passed!) and
left before the fun began. We saw some of the folks on the local news
and noted one person who supports it is one of those people who seems
nice, but whenever she opens her mouth, all you hear is hatred and
ignorance.

One council member's wife was the long-term chair of the dog park
group, so that will be an interesting dynamic. He was joking about the
volume of email council members received over the past few days, saying
he was sure it was all in relation to the historic districts
legislation...

The city has given notice to our animal warden, so the county is going
to be responsible for problems. The state of Ohio has vicious dog laws.

The legislation next goes to the Safety Committee for hearings and I'm
pretty sure they will be the most popular hearings ever. We'll see what
happens...

Just curious, do you have much of a problem with dog-fighting in your area?

No. There's virtually no place to hold a dog fight.

That doesn't mean that there aren't people who may participate in dog
fighting somewhere, but our problems are generally caused by dumbass
owners and I haven't seen any statistics of breeds responsible for
bites within our city limits, for instance.

I'd also guess that the people who bother to buy a license for their
dogs are the ones who will be punished, should this go through.

Is this the one where they're proposing a breed ban without grandfathering
in the dogs that currently live within the jurisdiction?

Isn't that the way it always is, the decent, law-abiding citizens pay for
the crimes of others.

I used to watch Animal Cops, Detroit on Animal Planet, until I got burned
out on all the sad and horrible cases. It appears they have a huge
dog-fighting problem there. And rather ineffective laws requiring that an
actual fight must be witnessed. The battered, mauled, bitten dogs aren't
enough.

I saw the pit bull that lives on our road the other day. He's already
bigger than my Merlin, and Merlin stands 27 inches and weighs 80 pounds.

I heard that on the radio today on the way home from school (WNIR out of
Akron). Some of the comments were mind-blowing.

Dayton, Ohio is one of the hotbeds for illegal dog fighting. Recently
busted were rings with dozens of dogs. Often buildings are found with both
dogs and evidence. It's very sad (all the animals wind up being
euthanized), to say nothing of the strain placed on the shelter that has to
house these animals. They are dangerous, frequently attacking staff who try
to care for them.

My neighbor owns a couple of CP and while they look quite fierce, they are
both big babies to hear her tell it.

During the Michael Vick saga the HSUS sponsored a YouTube video contest on
against dogfighting and the winner: "I don't want to fight today", would
bring tears to your eyes.

As the owner of JD(s), I know certain dogs can be bred to have particular
characteristics, but I have always felt that there are mostly no bad dogs,
only foolish people who make them that way.

Kind regards,
(the)duckster
