I would think the sweating thing would be a huge problem in
cold weather - once it passes you're going to get really,
really cold.

Oh, I suppose it's possible, just really unlikely. And since it *was*
hot in here on that day, why assume zebras when horses are the obvious
culprit? The other thing is that just a couple of days previous, this
same coworker asked a much-younger-than-me coworker if she was a
member of AARP.

Could be your worker's misperception of age. But hot flashes do start
at widely variable ages, as does menopause. Even in the late 30s they
aren't unknown, just fairly rare.

However, one thing that was surefire trigger of a hot flash for me was
excess heat, like being in a hot room. Yeah, ain't ma nature
wonderful. Why couldn't I have hot flashes when it was freezing, when
they would have been useful?

For me, it's stress. A couple of years back I had to physically
intervene in a confrontation between two team members. Handlers, not
dogs. I was so angry at both of them it was all I could do not to knock
their stupid heads together.

It triggered the worst hot flash I've ever had. I felt like I was about
to burst into flames. I was totally drenched with sweat; couldn't have
been any wetter if I'd been thrown into a pond. And bright red. Not
just my face, either - neck, chest, arms, legs, everything.

My daughter said the color change was so immediate and dramatic she
expected me to swell up and burst my clothes like some sort of
menopausal Incredible Hulk. Since she has a well developed instinct for
self preservation she withheld this observation until I'd had a gallon
of ice water, a cold shower, a long conversation with my husband via
cell phone and a couple of Coronas.

What I remember is from when my mom went through it, and she actually
enjoyed it in winter. Used to go to work in just a sweater and a skirt, and
when dad made her take a coat (just in case), she either carried it or left
it open. Used to leave her office windows wide open too.

Thanks for your expression of concern. Muttley ate very little and
exercised much over our long weekend, and I think he may have lost some
weight (the pictures were taken Saturday). I will take him to the vet to
make sure he has not put on too much since he was last weighed in January,
when he was 82 lb. I think he has some bully breed in his ancestry, which
may affect his proportions. He does not look as fat "in person" as he does
in those pictures. He (and I) look especially wide on my monitor, because
I do not have the right video card and the images are stretched about 30%,
like in a carnival mirror.

Hi Paul,

Muttley did look a bit over-weight to me. What we did with ours was cut
back 1 cup of food per day for each of them, probably about six months or so
ago, when they appeared to be putting on a little extra weight. I have
posted their photo's on occasion. They had each been getting two cups of
food, morning and evening. They now each get 1 & 1/2 cups of food per
feeding. One very good reason to cut back is hip and/or arthritis problems
as Muttley ages. It's better to try and get a handle on it now, while he is
still able to get some exercise and before he begins to have any of those
sorts of issues IMO. He's a large dog, and large dogs tend to have those
sorts of problems as they age. I'd imagine especially in colder climates.

No, not a bit overweight - a *lot* overweight.

Don't be kind to him here, because it's not being kind to Muttley.

And if Schoen doesn't get started on a weight reduction program soon
(less food, more exercise), it'll be virtually impossible to do it
when Muttley gets older and starts to have energy and structural
problems, etc.

He's a large dog, and large dogs tend to have those
sorts of problems as they age.

No, no more than small dogs do, TD, who have owners who think that
food = love.

It's never the dog, it's always the dog owner.

Additionally, I've rarely seen a fat dog who didn't have a fat owner.

I think I'll even apply for government funding one day to "study" that
phenomenon.

I'd imagine especially in colder climates.

There's no good reason for a dog to ever be thaaaat over-weight, no
matter what the temperature is.

Waterfowl hunters in colder parts of the country usually start to put
a few pounds on their dogs in the late summer or early fall, in
anticipation of the hunting season, but only a few pounds. And by the
time the hunting season is over, the extra poundage is long gone.

How about his girth? Does that seem healthy and from a caring owner?

Honestly? I think that issue is between Muttley and his vet.

I'm happy though that he had such a nice weekend, socializing with friends
and behaved like a good canine citizen.

Kind regards,

But if we really want to help Muttley, don't you think Paul will be more
inclined to *hearing* if his hackles aren't up?

No, it's not.

Not if you care about Muttley.

Do you need a doctor to tell you when a person is seriously
overweight?
