No, not a bit overweight - a *lot* overweight.

Don't be kind to him here, because it's not being kind to Muttley.

But if we really want to help Muttley, don't you think Paul will be more
inclined to *hearing* if his hackles aren't up?

How is the vet responsible for Muttley's weight?

No. Paul got lots of good, positive attention when he showed up
here, and he responded by neglecting his dog and pissing all over
everyone. Heck, he's still doing it to Janet.

Generally, yes, that's always the best way to go about it.

But you weren't here when Schoen first dropped by. He got oodles and
oodles of help, advice, even in-person free training from Janet Boss.
Now Boss may be a bimbo, but she did offer to help. In person.

Unfortunately, Muttley bit another dog at the class, and then it went
downhill quickly. Then the SOB even went to other boards and
badmouthed Janet to their members. No, Janet didn't exactly handle
the matter graciously, but she also didn't deserve his abuse.

Like so much of what Schoen touches, he ****ed it all up, and dumped
on and totally blamed Boss, etc. It had virtually nothing to do with
Boss, and just about everything to do with Schoen stumbling around
like a clumsy oaf, unable to control Muttley, and Muttley's lack of
socialization to other dogs at the time.

The Google archives are littered with the back-and-forths if you're
interested in them.

But please trust me.

Schoen's a know-it-all of monumental proportions, and about as lazy as
they come. He lives to bite the hand that feeds him.

So, in my opinion, you should worry more about Muttley, and less about
Schoen.

Schoen doesn't deserve your kindness or support.

Horrible, isn't it? There seems to be a segment of "breed only" people
who don't think that dogs need activity (or even training, for that
matter). And then there are people who think food is love.

I was glad the fat ones were quickly eliminated, sending the message that
overweight in a hunting/herding dog wasn't going to wash.

Even the Labs. I swear that the winning Lab on one of the dog "shows"
(Westminster, Eukanuba, Crufts?) in the past year on Animal Planet was
overweight.

If Muttley is a guard dog, perhaps Paul envisions Muttley as a bowling
ball. When I saw Muttley last year, I told Paul that there was a weight
problem. it's metasticised. Yet Paul is quick to berate overweight wpmen,
so I sense he's somewhat critical of the problem

If I recall, and correct me if I am wrong, the original thread was about
what a good and safe time the dog had among people. Given his past history,
for me it was a reason to celebrate.

Do you need a doctor to tell you when a person is seriously
overweight?

The question really is it my business to tell them they are? I can't think
of a single person who would thank someone profusely for being told they are
fat. I know I wouldn't.

Kind regards,

Maybe people shouldn't confuse themselves with their dogs. If your
ego is wounded by someone telling you that your dog is getting
seriously fat, then you have a problem. Actually, you have two
problems.

I'm not sure that's a good parallel. The way weight in
humans is stigmatized in the US involves personal shame and
a bunch of nonsense that's not directly tied to the question
of health (look at the way "Jack" and Paul both use "fat" as
an insult). I think it's possible to talk about the dog's
health without implying sloth, degeneracy, and all sorts of
stuff. But I'm pretty sure that there's absolutely no point
in trying to help Muttley, because Paul just won't listen.

No, it's not.

It's for anyone who cares anything about *Muttley's* health, which I
do, and which you should, too.

If you saw Schoen doing something stupid or dangerous with a certain
collar and leash, would you tell Schoen about it, or just allow
Muttley to be needlessly injured?

A lot of vets (lousy ones, in my opinion) hesitate to call a spade a
spade, or a fat dog a fat dog, because they don't want to chance
injuring the client-vet relationship. I have no such compunction, but
I *do* know an overweight dog when I see one, and I'd like to see
Muttley live to a ripe (and healthy) old age.

If I recall, and correct me if I am wrong, the original thread was about
what a good and safe time the dog had among people. Given his past history,
for me it was a reason to celebrate.

It was a hopeful sign, no question about it. And as I acknowledged
previously, Schoen *has* done some very nice things for Muttley.

But he needs to do at least one more thing, and that's to take some
weight off him, now, while he still can.

Do you need a doctor to tell you when a person is seriously
overweight?

The question really is it my business to tell them they are?

If you care about them, why wouldn't you?

If (say) your daughter was becoming seriously over or under weight,
wouldn't you want to sit her down and have a talk with her?

boggle

I can't think
of a single person who would thank someone profusely for being told they are
fat. I know I wouldn't.

Well, that's an absolutely horrible analogy, Ducky, because I'm not
telling Muttley anything. I'm telling his *owner*, and wouldn't you
want his vet to tell him that his dog is fat?

Would you fear Muttley's feelings being hurt by Schoen's vet telling
him that his dog was fat? Should he whisper it in his ear, to keep
Muttley from hearing?

sigh
