Poor little fella! Hope he's back on his feet and dancing real soon.

Thanks. He'll probably be dancing *too* soon...

Thank you, I really appreciate it! I've started calling him "Mr
Ambassador" because of you.

That whole "traditional dances of Pomerania" description engaged my
imagination in more ways than I care to admit, but it included a whole
costumed culture...

Hmmm... tell me more...

This is where hot weather comes in handy.

Ooh, good point. Perhaps I'll turn the ac down...

My own vet said that watching and waiting is their recommendation at
this time, and we'll do x-rays if he doesn't improve. Let's hope he
does, and this doesn't turn out to be chronic (back problems are
common in poms).

Do you have access to a veterinary physical therapist? They
know some things that vets don't, including treatment
things, and can be an incredible help in dealing with
skeletal/muscular problems.

Thanks for the tip -- I'll look for one.

The e-vet also guessed his age to be around 8, about double what other
vets and the rescue group have guessed,

Did she say why?

She based it on his teeth. My own vets tend not to guess, other than to
say whether an animal is fully grown or not. The rescue group tends to
low-ball the number anyway -- they're not doing it on purpose, but of
course it's easier to place younger dogs. I wouldn't have cared how old
he was, he is such a great little guy.

Here's hoping that he's up and bouncing soon (well, in three
weeks, anyway), and that you'll be doing your version of
swearing at him for making you worry.

Thank you.

Think of Czech/Balkan/Russian "folk" costumes and stir in a large
amount of Munchkinland flavor from the movie of The Wizard of Oz.

And yes, the interesting hats did play a part.

Thanks, Shelly. This morning he tried to bark at me as I left, as
he unfortunately usually does, and instead he just squeaked.

Oh, that's *pitiful*. Poor little guy!

It's funny that I want even the obnoxious behaviors back when any
of the animals doesn't feel well.

Funny, but understandable. When they're sick, you just want them
well ASAP. The obnoxious behaviors are a sign that things are
getting back to normal.

And of course a day without the traditional dances of Pomerania is
like a day without sunshine...

I know what you mean. Here, it's the kidney bean dance. The world
is a sad and gloomy place when there's no kidney beaning.

My poor little guy seems to have a back injury. We made a midnight run to
the emergency vet because he seemed to be breathing funny -- sharp
intakes of breath, probably (according to the dr) because of pain. She
shot him up with pain meds and he is on Rimadyl for 10 days and is
supposed to rest for 3 weeks. So far he's sleeping under the bed and
walking a bit with a sad droopy tail, very un-Pom like. I'll need to
crate him when he starts feeling better to make sure he doesn't re-injure
it.

Tok, the happiest go-luckiest keeshond in the world had a back injury
several years ago - he wouldnt' turn his neck and limped on and off.. He
was like you are describing your pom - droopy sad and he hardly moved all
summer long. My doctor suggested what you suggested - wait and see. And we
did. And massage too! I massaged his neck frequently and we considered
accupuncture (but decided he was too skittish) and after a couple of months
he was active again and now, without a bigger dog wrestling him down, he
appears completely pain free. We still massage regularly. In any case, he
appears to be completely well and healthy at this point. I encourage you to
consider acupuncture if you have a vet who can do this nearby and your dog
has an appropriate temperment. And massage!!

Sorry to hear this. Chile went through a period of probable back
pain three years ago, and it was treated with Deramaxx and a
course of prednisone (not my favorite drug to give). Spinal
arthritis was evident on the X-ray. She did recover after a few
weeks; I hope your Max progresses quickly.

I feel worried and sad.

It's hard to feel otherwise, when they are in evident pain and
can't tell you where it hurts.
