No kidding. 140# is just bizarre. I asked if he actually gets weighed,
because so many people are in "I have a REALLY BIG DOG" mode and
exaggerate.

Bebe said in rec.pets.dogs.behavior:

Both mother & father are normal sized goldens.

What do you consider a normal size for a Golden Retriever?

Yup.

This is a good example of where Muttley is probably headed -
*seriously* overweight, too old to be able to do much about it, on
various medications, etc.

PS: Any change in Tuck's eating habits yet?

Reka was here for two weeks. Tuck ate well and eating wasn't an issue. Reka
left Tuesday and he hasn't eaten since. She comes back this evening

I take it that the daily activities journal hasn't turned up anything
yet?

Have you tried using another dog in Reka's place yet?

Have you tried not making Tuck work for his food yet?

Have you tried changing anything else yet?

You can probably tell by now that I'm really interested in this topic,
right?

I've just never heard of anything like it happening before, at least
not for as long as your situation has been going on, so it really
intrigues me.

If you'd rather me not keep asking you about this, I won't, of course.

But I'll probably cry.

some. He eats in the presence of another dog. He will eat away from me in
someone else's home. Again, in the presence of another dog.
He will eat away from home without the presence of another dog ..If I'm
there. But not if I'm not.
But my presence when I'm home makes no difference.

If I go away from home, and there is another dog, he eats fine.

If I go away from home and he has no other dog, he doesn't eat.

You can't tempt him.

Have you tried using another dog in Reka's place yet?

Yes, and he eats

Have you tried not making Tuck work for his food yet?

Yep. Doesn't make a difference.

I have a new one. I have a visiting humane society horse. My 46 year old
mare adopted her. And will not eat out of the presence of this new horse.

But I'll probably cry.

Don't do that

I know there is probably a good reason why not to do this, but I'll ask
anyway. Kali, the stray my daughter has, and Whiskey, the elderly dog with
cancer, were not eating well. We bought our daughter a bag of Beneful a
couple weeks ago when we were at Cosco. She now mixes a bit of the Beneful
in with their regular kibble, and they eat every bite of their food now. I
figured for Kali, eating is better than not eating. And for Whiskey, why
not let her enjoy the time she has left. Do you think Tuck would eat with a
little something special in his food when Reka is gone?

I'm coming in late on this. Does the temperature outside make a
difference? I ask because it always has for me and my dogs. When it
gets hot hot, I can't eat. Cubbe has started leaving half her chow in
her bowl or not bothering us if we forget to feed her. She's skipped a
full day's food. Since her energy and health are good, we figure she's
naturally adjusting to the weather and eating less.

If Tuck isn't as interested in eating because it's over 85 degrees for
days at a time, he might be choosing under what circumstances he'll eat
almost at random, just as a way of skipping calories.

No, tried that. He will eat something special if he gets to earn it. He
figures if he works for it, he wants paid for it, whether he eats it or not
is his discretion. Sometimes he does, sometimes he doesn't. When he
doesn't. He takes it to his crate and stores it until he's ready to eat it.

Sooooooo. We took away his crate, and he's started storing stuff under the
couch. The only other dog I've ever known that stored their stash under the
couch is his dad......
