Default READ/volunteers background check - Ohio HB 190 (was : Maybe: an update)

For those of you who can volunteer in the schools for READ.... do it....
(which obviously IS a content standard). You are doing more good than
you know. Just remember, get those fingerprints and that background
check. I don't know about other states, but all volunteers in Ohio need
one.

Hmm they never fingerprinted me, or did a background check when we
volunteered. The school came to us and asked for READ dogs. But I do have
a
background check, because I have a CCW. That's proof that I've certainly
had a background check, so i wonder if that's good enough for the schools.
Libraries also have READ programs, so it doesn't have to be limited to
schools.

But schools are so hinky about anything related to guns (They kicked a kid
out of school because he had a t-shirt with a cartoon, "transformers" or
something, on it printed with a gun)

I can just imagine showing a CCW card in the school. They might pass out,
and send me to jail. Shhheeesh

All volunteers in our system need fingerprinted FBI/BCII checked - not party
room mothers, but anybody that wants to volunteer in a classroom does. In
fact, I had 2 that wanted to, but never heard back from them after they were
sent the info. I'm guessing they didn't want to go through the hassle. We
must get fingerprinted when we get our next license. Those on 8 year or
permanant certificates (which they don't offer anymore) need it by Sept. 5.
We have to have them done every 5 years.

I checked HB 190 and volunteering and came up with this. Maybe it's because
our volunteers take kids to other rooms. I'm assuming you stay close by the
classroom....
As used in sections 109.574 to 109.577 of the Revised Code:

(A) "Organization or entity" means a religious, charitable, scientific,
educational, athletic, or service institution or organization or local
government entity that provides care, treatment, education, training,
instruction, supervision, or recreation to children.

(B) "Unsupervised access to a child" means that the person in question has
access to a child and that either of the following applies:

(1) No other person eighteen years of age or older is present in the same
room with the child.

(2) If outdoors, no other person eighteen years of age or older is within a
thirty-yard radius of the child or has visual contact with the child.

I'll have to check some of the local libraries. I'd like to do that.
Obviously, I can't do it in my own classroom while teaching, and during the
school year I can't volunteer at another school, so libraries might be the
way for me to go.

I understand the hinkyness (is that a word??) - We had a student hold a
classroom at gunpoint about 10 years ago. I think that still sticks in
their brains - podunk town, it wouldn't happen here, but it did.
Thankfully, the outcome was good, but still, it unnerverd a few. I had a
student suspended last year because he said his trapper keeper was a bomb
(He was big into the Navy SEALS and it didn't even look close, but he said
it and kids came to me about it ... 0 tolerence). I felt bad, but I had to
report it because of the other parents who might hear this and take issue
with the fact that I didn't do anything about it. We had a long talk about
how you have to be careful what you say in school. Playing at school isn't
the same as playing at home. He understood why I had to do it, as did his
parents, and that I didn't think he was trying to threaten anyone. I had
another boy in trouble this year for pointing his finger at another student
on the playground and pretending to shoot him. Same thing. Sure glad I'm
not a kid again.

Actually no. I do this in a room by ourselves.

As used in sections 109.574 to 109.577 of the Revised Code:

Good stuff to know, so i wrote to the school and asked. Thanks. I'm not
afraid of fingerprints and background checks. Or drug tests for that matter.
