Default Lab Won't Potty Outside

I have a 2 year old lab that was housebroken. During the past few
months he has become stubborn about going potty outside. When I take
him out he'll pee but refuses to poop unless I send him back.
Sometimes he'll still refuse. We bring him back in and within 10
minutes he'll poop in the house. We've corrected him and cleaned the
area and he still does it. We've left him outside for a few hours and
when we bring him back inside he'll still do it. We've been working
with him on this since it started and are quite fed up with it. Does
anyone have any suggestions?

Has your dog been checked recently by your vet for any health problems?

How have you corrected him? How have you communicated what you want him to do?

How have you cleaned up? Did you use an enzyme cleaner?

Leaving him outside won't give him the idea of what you want.

Take your dog for a walk and praise him when he poops. Use a specific
phrase, like "good poop!" This will help him associate a word with the
action and will help put pooping on command, which is a very handy
thing.

Did anything else change over the last few months?

For example, did you change his food? Did you stop taking him for
walks? Did you stop/start/change anything else?

When I take
him out he'll pee but refuses to poop unless I send him back.

"Unless [you] send him back?

Maybe you're just not keeping him out there long enough.

Do you take him for long walks? Does he get any other exercise?

Sometimes he'll still refuse. We bring him back in and within 10

Don't let him do that.

We've corrected him and cleaned the

Define "corrected".

We've left him outside for a few hours and
when we bring him back inside he'll still do it.

Don't let him do that.

Yes, you have to follow him around like you're his shadow, put him in
his crate when you can't keep an eye on him, put him outside, etc.

You just can't let him keep making these mistakes.

Yes, treat it like when you originally housetrained him.

1. Take him outside more frequently.
2. Take him for long walks (where he'll be tempted to mark some
territory, cover other dogs' "stuff" with his own, etc.
3. Don't let him make mistakes.

Good luck!

You could try walking your dog a couple of times a day where other dogs
walk. When your dog sniffs around those areas where other dogs go, it will
stimulate him to do the same.

No. I'll set up an appointment with the vet.

How have you corrected him? How have you communicated what you want him to do?

If we catch him we say no in a low stern voice, take him outside and
tell him to go potty. If he finishes we praise him for it.

How have you cleaned up? Did you use an enzyme cleaner?

We use an oxygen based spray and then sprinkle some arm & hammer on
the spot. Then vacuum that the next day.

Leaving him outside won't give him the idea of what you want.

I don't think this communicates anything to the dog unless you actually
see him pooping and then you might try getting him outside immediately.

Praising him and using a word to help him associate it with elimination
can be a wonderful thing.

Look into a product like Nature's Miracle. Enzymes cleaners are
formulated to do a job that other cleaners simply can't do.

Keep at it and don't let him make any mistakes. Stay with him until he
poops - or walk him, which should also stimulate his body to do the
right thing.

I think Jack asked if there had been any recent changes in diet, etc.
Those are important questions to ask yourself if there's suddenly a
change in behavior.

I think the writing was unclear there - I got the impression
they were praising when the dog finished pooping - i.e. they
waited until it finished. And that's actually not great
timing - you should praise when the dog starts (although not
enough to cause him to stop, obviously).

make sure you have feeding schedule for your dog .having a regular
feeding routine will not only help with overall obedience and
discipline, it will enable you to monitor "output" by monitoring
"input." Do not free-feed puppies & run; always remove leftover food
after 15 or 20 minutes.
other tip is use the same area to avoid confusion and accidents,
rather than continually changing it during the training process.

It's a two-year-old dog he's talking about.
