Dusty, aka Dust Bunny our shepherd has lost so much weight. In the
past 2 years she has gone from 120 lbs to 84 lbs today's weight. They
say her back end/back legs are full of arthritis and she is losing
muscle which is the cause of her weight loss. They said she will keep
losing weight as the arthritis gets worse. Dust is only 7 now and a
very big girl. She has some trouble getting up once in awhile but gets
the zoommies with the girls and will play with them outside, running
and bumping into each other. Dusty has always moved at her own pace,
which is usually slow unless she is playing. Keep you fingers and paws
crossed she keeps going strong for many more years.

And Koz has started throwing up this evening, I think it may be that
she had her Dhlpp shot.

Has anyone doodles been sick after getting that shot??

That's the latest and greatest at our house! NOT!!!

Sorry to hear about Dusty! Did your vet suggest anything to give
her relief from her arthritis?

We've used Adequan on two severely arthritic dogs, a GSD and a
Chihuahua, with good success - their mobility improved greatly
after we started them on it. It's a prescription drug that is
given by injection, one shot about every 4-6 weeks. Your vet can
do it, or your vet can teach you to do it (saves money). As far
as I know, it has minimal side effects. As my arthritis
develops, I'm hoping that it's approved for human use soon!!!

And Koz has started throwing up this evening, I think it may be that
she had her Dhlpp shot.

I hope she's feeling better by tomorrow.

They gave an "L" in the combo? didn't think anyone was doing that
anymore. How old is Koz?

What kind of dog is Dusty? Sorry - I don't remember. That's a big
weight loss, but blaming arthritis? I'm a little confused.

84 pounds sounds like a good weight for a shepherd. Isn't this a good
thing? Could overweight have contributed to her problem?

The problems with shepherds, is angulation extremes. If they have problems
it's amplified. However, this SHOULD be reported to the breeder. This dog
is way too young for this.

This is just tragic.

Will do.

My vet recommends it in the spring for dogs that spend a lot
of time outdoors or in the woods. I haven't done it for my
guys, though.

That's what I was thinking too.

Maybe it's a difference in vets? Last year (at my old vet) she gave both
dogs that. This year the vet gave a Lepto 4L and a Distemper w/o Corona
(whatever that is?).

Giving the Lepto on it's own (I won't do it on the same visit) is what
most vets are doing now (if Lepto is given at all).

How old is Koz?

Is that what made the difference? Shadow is 9.

I've really started to rethink this whole vaccination thing since Shelby's
illness and was wondering what other people do/think. I've asked both of
the different vets I've gone to in the last month what their take was on
yearly vacs and they both were pretty much on the same wavelenth. i.e.
young dogs and older dogs immune systems are more 'fragile' therefore they
should be vaccinated yearly whereas middle aged dogs could probably get by
with every 3 years but didn't recommend it. At the last vet I specifically
asked about the distemper as Shadow is never in contact with other dogs
although I suppose there is always the (rare) possibility of contact with
widlife. I was still debating (I thought) whether or not to have it done
when he took Shadow in the back to draw bloodwork and then he vaccinated
him. He now has a lump at the injection site - at least I assume it was the
injection site - that I'm keeping an eye on.

Oh, okay - I wasn't sure. Ours does separate lepto also.
