You purchased a byb or puppymill puppy. Dogs from these sources commonly
have kennel cough due to exposure in contaminated environments before he
developed his too young immune system.

I might add, you should take the puppy back ASAP. It still should be
covered under puppy lemon laws. It's sick.

Otherwise consider swallowing the vet bill. Your puppy needs a vet.

A vaccination will not help a sick puppy. Your puppy needs a vet. The
person/company that you purchased the puppy should be responsible for the
vet bill. But they may demand you see their vet if they are going to cover
it (under the puppy lemon laws)

Some puppy diseases acquired in puppy mills may be fatal, and it's
imperative that you contact the seller ASAP. Getting on this now, instead
of talking about it to strangers on the internet should take priority

I'm guessing you're in Germany? I don't think many people
in the US are familiar with costs over there or breeding
culture, which I understand is much more strict than it is
in the US (although "puggle" isn't a breed and so there
aren't real breed clubs or breeder's codes of ethics)
..
Anyway, I'd 1) definitely get the puppy to a vet; when a
young puppy gets sick things can potentially go very wrong
very quickly, and 2) definitely let the breeder know what's
up and see if they'll cover all or some of the veterinary
expenses.

Getting a little off-topic here, but: I'm not familiar with vet
costs in Germany, but am reasonably familiar with the breeding
culture there. Germany's somewhat unique in that it's the breed
clubs that register dogs and not the VDH (Verband fur das Deutsche
Hundewesen, the German equivalent of the AKC). And yes, some of
the breed clubs have quite strict breeding regulations.

However... just as in the US, this hasn't stopped people from
founding their own breed clubs/registries that aren't affiliated
with the VDH when their dogs don't prove up to snuff by breed
club standards or when they want to create "new breeds". Witness
the "Waeller" - a mix of (I kid you not) Briard and Australian
Shepherd. And yes, they have their own "breed club" - see
http://www.waellersam.de/.

I know about this in part because my beloved girl Patience
(for those of you who don't remember her, she was AKC Ch. CKC
ptd Nightwind Impulsive Shopper HX ATDd OTDs STDc OA NAJ OAC
OJC NGC RS-O JS-O GS-N CGC TT OFA OFA-EL CERF HOF - R.I.P,
baby girl) was invited to become part of the founding stock
of this new, er, "breed". And I actually DECLINED! (What WAS
I thinking?!)

But back to the main point: yes, there are fools born every
minute all over the world, it seems.

Anyway, I'd 1) definitely get the puppy to a vet; when a
young puppy gets sick things can potentially go very wrong
very quickly, and 2) definitely let the breeder know what's
up and see if they'll cover all or some of the veterinary
expenses.

Ditto all of this.

But Dianne - you could have become a bazillionare!

Thanks for the info on Germany. I didn't realize that dogs
are registered with the clubs - that's really interesting.
