Google is not my friend today.
There have been threads that recommended good books on dog behavior, training, etc. Our library is looking to add to its collection and I could use either a link to some of the threads or some suggestions. All I could primarily find when aGoogling was a bunch of spam... |

And then there are the standard ones like Donaldson's "Culture Clash," which I lot of people don't like but I do, and McConnell's "The Other End of the Leash." -- Melinda Shore - Software longa, hardware brevis - Prouder than ever to be a member of the reality-based community |

Not knowing what's in the collection already, and assuming that you want stuff JQP would want to know/troubleshoot Before and After Getting Your Puppy - Ian Dunbar (also, any of his pamphlets on socialization, barking, chewing, etc.) How to teach a new dog old tricks - Ian Dunbar Control Unleashed - Leslie McDevitt Child Proofing Your Dog - Kilcommons and Wilson Cautious Canine and Feisty Fido by Patricia McConnell Aggression in Dogs: Practical Management, Prevention and Behavior Modification - Brenda Aloff (also Canine Body Language) Dogs are from Neptune - Jean Donaldson Mine! A guide to resource guarding in dogs - Jean Donaldson Dogs: A new understanding of canine origin, behavior and evolution - Raymond and Lorna Coppinger I'm missing a whole slew of people. Stuff from Pat Miller, Turid Rugaas, Birch and Bailey are all generally good. There should also be more books on fun stuff to do with dogs and how to choose the right dog for you, although I can't remember any off the top of my head. Suja |

Hi ! I gotta jump in on this...
Can anyone tell me about Turid Rugaas and her book... it looks interesting... Also has anyone actually read Lorenz? As for books I like... Has anybody read Urban Dog: The Ultimate Street Smarts Training Manual by Cis Frankel (Author). I think it has a lot of practical advice. I like Ian Dunbar and Jean Donaldson's approach a lot. My opinion of Jean Donaldson is that she's an awful writer, but has a lot of great ideas... Culture Clash has loads and loads of brilliant ideas and insights, but the writing style is choppy, disjoined and can even come off as rude at times. I haven't read Pam Reid's books, but apparently many trainers do these days, so it might be worth including. Patricia McConnell's books have inspired me... OTHER END OF THE LEASH especially... also FOR THE LOVE OF A DOG. I REALLY like Sarah Kalnajs videos... (o.k. they're not books...) Everyone seems to love this Stanley Coren guy, but when I read The Intelligence of Dogs I had some problems... mainly he will make claims, but doesn't back them up... however, I think his books are so popular people would expect to see them. Of course, the all time classic is the one by the Monkey's of New Skete... I think its called "How to Drive Your Dog Ape through the use of Excessive Force and Discipline" or something like that. - - Still if you want to have a complete and balanced selection I guess you have to include them and Millan too. I also like 101 Dog Tricks: Step by Step Activities to Engage, Challenge, and Bond with Your Dog by Kyra Sundance. |

It's like that every day ![]() For JPQ I'd recommend Pamela Dennison's Positive Dog Training, How Dogs Learn by Burch and Bailey, Caníne Body Language by Brenda Aloff Dominance Fact or Fiction by Barry Eaton There are so many good books out there, James O'Heares stuff is really good though academic. Patricia McConnell, I'm reading her For the love of a dog at the mo. Jean Donaldsons new book Oh Behave isnt yet available in the UK unless imported. Alison |
