Today a friend and her little dog Molly joined me and Muttley for about a 3
mile walk on the NCR trail, from about 3 to 5 PM. It was a perfect August afternoon, mid 80s, low humidity (for MD), and the trail was packed with people, dogs, bikes, strollers, and babies. A good time for frequent socialization. At the turn-around point, we took a short side trail to a small stream, where the dogs got a drink, and Muttley plopped down prone in the water. I didn't get a shot of that, but here is one where he was lying on his side. He was rather muddy when he got up, but very cool and happy: http://www.smart.net/~pstech/Muttley..._200808-16.jpg Then, on the way back, I took some shots of Muttley and Molly: http://www.smart.net/~pstech/Muttley..._200808-17.jpg http://www.smart.net/~pstech/Muttley..._200808-17.jpg http://www.smart.net/~pstech/Muttley..._200808-18.jpg Just for general interest, last night I organized a Hay Ride for a Sierra Club outing, and we had about 22 people in attendance. Muttley's tail looks similar to Gracies, except his comes to a bit of a point anyway. Gracies dosen't. It just looks sort of lopped off at the end, with no point. More of a blunt end. I often wonder how the heck it got that way. td |

I often wonder how the heck it got that way. Considering Muttley's origins in a bad area of Baltimore City, I figure either it was due to some kind of abuse or accident, or somebody lopped it off when he was a pup, thinking it might make him look "badder". The point is just long hair, except for a tiny extension of skin. I'm not going to poke at it too much. It looks OK and it "works", and that is enough for me, and I don't think he cares. I've become so used to it that dogs with longer tails seem odd to me. Molly seems to have an interestingly shaped tail, but it has probably just been groomed that way. I'm not really sure what breed she might be. Seems to have a little bit of Scotty? She is definitely yappy and hyper like a terrier. Do you have a picture of Gracie? Paul and Muttley |

"Paul E. Schoen" wrote in message ... "tiny dancer" wrote in message .. . Do you have a picture of Gracie? Paul and Muttley I do, but unfortunately none of her tail. I'll have to try and take one from the back end. Her tail is such a short stub that's it's hard to catch on a picture unless I aim for it. Murphy had such a magnificent tail, long, hairy, and she carried it proudly. Dh wasn't really keen on adopting Gracie because of her lack of tail, but I pointed out 'it's not her fault she doesn't have a tail.' Merlin has one of the longest tails I've ever seen, so we have a stub and then a really long one now. http://picasaweb.google.com/starysta...ey=lbAKGQGGbdg I was told Gracie was found during a hurricane, at the beach. Someone saw her out in the storm and brought her in. They said she could barely walk because her pads on her feet were all scraped off and bleeding. She was very skinny, and of course later we discovered heartworm positive too. On a brighter note, Kali, the stray who had puppies last fall, has turned into such a wonderful dog. She's very sweet, affectionate, loving. In those ways she reminds me a lot of my murphy girl. Since she lives right next door, along with Whiskey, Monte and Pinga, I see them all daily. Whiskey is the eldest member of our extended family now, and doing okay still after having been diagnosed with a large mass in one of her lungs. Monte and Pinga are two of a kind, rascals, always into some mischief. Chasing each other all over the yard. But Kali is very calm and sweet, just wants to curl up beside you for some lovin. td |

Apparently you did not read the other responses where this was discussed, but Muttley was rescued from the streets of a tough Baltimore neighborhood where he had been running wild, and his tail may have been docked by a backyard breeder or from accident or abuse. Muttley's life was spared on three separate occasions where I could have made a different decision and he would not be alive now. He has been a really good dog. Paul and Muttley |

"Paul E. Schoen"wrote: Considering Muttley's origins in a bad area of Baltimore City, Actually, you have no idea where he *originated* - you only know where he was found. He could have come from anywhere. I figure either it was due to some kind of abuse or accident, or somebody lopped it off when he was a pup, thinking it might make him look "badder". Most likely, he's a Rottie mix, and it was deliberately docked when he was a newborn. That's pretty common with "breeders" of Rott mixes in the Baltimore area - over the years, I've met quite a few dogs of Muttley's general appearance who were known Rott X's and docked in similar fashion. The dumb thing about it (aside from docking in the first place!) is that it's not a correct dock for a Rott... doesn't stop the "breeders", though. :-P Personally, I prefer Rotts with natural tails, but you don't see them all that often. |

Today a friend and her little dog Molly joined me and Muttley for a 3 mile walk on the NCR trail..... ____________________________ Paul, Thanks for the pics. You and your friends sure know how to have a good time. I am just curious (not attacking or being critical). What kind of leash does Muttley have on? Some pics it looks like a rope, then I think it is a flat leather strap...keep in mind I am viewing pics via Web tv and they are often not as clear as other viewers may see the pictures. It is not urgent that I know, just one of those silly things that I am curious about. It has nothing to do with with your care of Muttley. Molly? What can I say? Obviously Muttley is not just drawn to her for her looks, he is looking at her "inner beauty" right? I agree with you she does have a tad bid of a Scotty look about her. She has got the look of some other terrier types. Wow, Muttley sure has a lot of friends doesn't he? Be Free.....Judy |

She has got the look of some other terrier types. Wow, Muttley sure has a lot of friends doesn't he? Muttley's celebrity personality type was Snoop Dog, and he has made a few friends. He's a real Cassanova with the ladies. (Remember, he "got Lucky" last summer). He seems to get along well with other dogs, but I have seen him give a bit of a menacing stare once or twice, so I need to be careful, as he does not tend to be very vocal. Muttley was attracted to Molly's "inner beauty", and attempted to access it by sticking his nose in her butt. My friend Lynn "cur-tailed" that activity a little too quickly, I think, rather than let him get a proper snoot-ful, but after initial introductions, they seemed to have only nominal interest in each other. I use an old 6 ft flat nylon (or perhaps part cotton) leash that was given to me by Debbie, who runs the horse rescue farm (ERRI), two years ago when I was still fostering him and considering doggie school. I have a large aluminum snap ring on the handle, which has a comfortable foam grip, and it comes in handy when I need to tether him temporarily while I am walking him. In some of his pictures, where he is tethered for a longer time, I have him on a vinyl coated steel wire with clips on each end. Lately I have been using a flat nylon limited slip collar, and he also has a similar sized license collar, which has a quick release metal clip. The slip collar must be slipped on and off over his muzzle and ears, but he associates it with going on walks, so he welcomes it. Paul and Muttley |
